Our Future

The railroad invests billions of dollars to maintain and upgrade its standards, increase its reliability, and expand its capacity. Its record investment will see the replacement and repair of track infrastructure, including rail ties and ballast along with a myriad of efficiency improvements throughout the network.

This includes resurfacing and repainting many miles of track as well as double tracks in a number of areas, such as the upgrading of two bridges to handle higher loads and more frequent freight traffic. BNSF has also been seeking ways to reduce emissions, including the latest tests of a battery-electric motor that uses less fuel and produces fewer particulates, nitrogen oxides and greenhouse gases.
