Laryngeal Cancer and Cigarette Smoking

Garry Giddens was working for KCS in 1989 when a track fell on his hand. He required multiple surgeries for fractures of the crush type. He was unable to return to work and was sued by KCS for violating the Federal Employers Liability Act.

Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos, a dangerous mineral is broken into tiny fibers. These fibers may become airborne, and then get into the lungs when people breathe in. The asbestos can cause irritation and damage lung tissue which can cause respiratory ailments like asbestosis. It may also cause mesothelioma which is a rare form of cancer that affects the lining of the lungs (pleura) and abdominal cavity (peritoneum).

People who work with asbestos or handle it often develop respiratory issues, such as wheezing and breath shortness. Pleural plaques also can form in the form of calcified thickenings on the pleural lining. It could also cause pleural effusion, which is a fluid buildup in the region around the lungs.

According to the Mesothelioma justice network, exposure to asbestos may lead to four different types cancers and several pulmonary diseases. Asbestosis triggers inflammation and scarring in the lungs' alveoli, which is where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide. It can lead to chronic bronchitis as well as emphysema.

People who have been exposed to asbestos may also be affected by plaques in the pleura, a condition which causes the lung's lining to become thicker. This can result in a variety of respiratory ailments, including chronic coughing and difficulty breathing. Pleurisy can be caused by asbestos exposure. It is a painful inflammation of the pleural membrane. Asbestos-related disorders can manifest between 10 to 70 years after exposure. They can be life-threatening.

Diesel Exhaust

Inhalation is one of the most harmful industrial exposures. Diesel fumes are known to cause lung cancer and lung issues that last for a long time. Railroad workers and other workers who are exposed to industrial toxins such as solvents, fuels and welding fumes, silica and creosote are often at risk of developing serious health problems which can cause severe harm.

In laboratory tests Diesel exhaust can cause DNA mutations. Inhaling diesel exhaust can cause irritation to the kansas city southern railway throat cancer, nose, and respiratory tract.
