With a line that extends across the northern United States and into Mexico, KCS is the first single-line railway that connects three of North America's nations. But it wasn't always like that.

The story of this historical railroad began in 1887, when Arthur E. Stilwell founded the Kansas City Southern Railway.

History

In the early 1900s the railroad's owners consolidated a number of its separate entities into what would become the present-day KCS which included the Fort Smith & Van Buren Railway Company, the Kansas City, Shreveport & Gulf Railway Company, and the Texarkana & Arkansas Valley Railroad Company. The railroad also operated a luxury train between Kansas City and New Orleans which was operated by Southern Belle. This was an absolute favorite of President Harry Truman. Truman's family.

After the Great Depression ended, in 1933 the railroad had a difficult time making a profit, since it was dependent on local agriculture, grain and less-than carload freight for its majority of transport. However, the fates intervened when oil was discovered nearby, and the railroad's fortunes changed drastically.

In 1944, local businessmen seized control of the railroad from East Coast investors and installed William Deramus as president. He instituted a series of major changes with a focus on growing the business of regions experiencing a post-World war II boom in the economy. He invested millions in improving the railroad by installing new ties, changing to diesel power, enhancing signals to ensure more efficient operations (Centralized Traffic Control was introduced in 1943) and finally, opening the huge Deramus Yard at Shreveport in 1956.

Current operations

KCSR was founded in 1887 when Arthur Stilwell, Edward L. Martin and others formed the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railway. The railroad served the suburban and riverside commercial and industrial districts in downtown Kansas City. Stilwell, an entrepreneur in the railroad industry who also constructed lines between New Orleans Shreveport, traces its beginnings to 1887.

In the mid-1990s, several large rail mergers threatened the KCSR's viability. Michael Haverty, the CEO of KCSR, reaffirmed Stilwell’s vision and began pushing for the company to expand into Mexico. The move was made easier by the formation in 1994 of NAFTA and subsequent changes to North American shipping patterns.

In 2021, KCS shareholders approved the sale of the railroad to Canadian Pacific (CP). The deal was concluded in April 2023. The two railroads joined together to form CPKC. 7,300 miles of KCS and 15,000 miles CP lines created one single freight route north-south across the continent. This is the largest merger ever in the history of railroads. CPKC is located in Kansas City. Branching

The KCSR has numerous branches throughout the company. The KCSR has a variety of branches. After Harvey Couch died in 1941 the leadership of KCSR was transferred to William Deramus. Deramus led the KCSR to invest millions in improvements throughout the 1950s. This included the establishment of ties to improve the efficiency of operations, upgrading the Centralized Traffic Control system in 1943, dieselizing in 1953, and opening the Deramus Yard in Shreveport, Kansas City Southern Railway Acute Myeloid Leukemia Louisiana, in the year 1956.

Today, KCSR is owned by Canadian Pacific Railway Limited. The Surface Transportation Board (STB) has endorsed the merger subject to certain conditions. KCSR will continue to function as usual until the deal is completed.

Among the prized "catch" trains on KCSR is its set of F units that run the Holiday Express each December. The train is a popular route for communities across KCSR's U.S. network and raises funds for the Salvation Army. The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, but vaccinations are on the way and it's possible that the Holiday Express will return next year.

Employees

KSCS is an American Class I railroad, founded in 1887. It operates in 10 states in the midwestern and southern regions, including Missouri Kansas Oklahoma Arkansas Mississippi Alabama and Louisiana. It hauls freight for seven important industries, including government and business that include mining and agriculture, military automotive, chemical and petroleum energy, industrial, and consumer products.

Marcus Lee, a black engineer at KCS was dismissed in September 2004 when he failed to signal and failed to stop his train. Lee then filed a lawsuit against KCS and claimed that he had been discriminated against due to race and that he had violated 42 U.S.C. 1981 and retaliated against him for filing EEOC complaints.

This collection contains pamphlets, letters, and newspaper clippings describing negotiations between KCS management and its union representatives over wage schedule changes.
