KCSR was founded in 1887 when Arthur Stilwell, Edward L. Martin and others formed the Kansas City Suburban Belt Railway. The railroad served the suburban and riverside commercial and industrial districts in downtown Kansas City. Stilwell, an entrepreneur in the railroad industry who also constructed lines between New Orleans Shreveport, traces its beginnings to 1887.

In the mid-1990s, several large rail mergers threatened the KCSR's viability. Michael Haverty, the CEO of KCSR, reaffirmed Stilwell’s vision and began pushing for the company to expand into Mexico. The move was made easier by the formation in 1994 of NAFTA and subsequent changes to North American shipping patterns.

In 2021, KCS shareholders approved the sale of the railroad to Canadian Pacific (CP). The deal was concluded in April 2023. The two railroads joined together to form CPKC. 7,300 miles of KCS and 15,000 miles CP lines created one single freight route north-south across the continent. This is the largest merger ever in the history of railroads. CPKC is located in Kansas City. The train is a popular route for communities across KCSR's U.S. network and raises funds for the Salvation Army. The event was cancelled in 2020 due to the pandemic, but vaccinations are on the way and it's possible that the Holiday Express will return next year.
