Csx Transportation Mds Transportation Workers May Be At Risk For Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia

CSX Transportation employees are at greater risk of developing leukemia due to their exposure to pesticides like benzene and. The four main types of leukemia include acute, chronic, myelogenous and lymphocytic leukemias. The cancer cells target various blood cells, based on the type of leukemia.

What is CLL?

CLL is a slow-growing form of blood cancer. It begins in lymphocytes (white blood cells which fight infections) in the bone marrow. It then spreads to the blood, causing swollen glands (lymph nodes). Over time, the accumulation of unhealthy blood cells could cause weakness, fatigue, and other signs. It's not known what causes the abnormal lymphocytes to expand and multiply, however, mutations in DNA may cause the condition. These mutations can occur randomly or pass from parent to child. Mutations in certain chromosomes--including chromosome 13 and 17 --have been linked to CLL.

A CBC test can reveal low blood platelet counts, which are essential for stopping bleeding and csx transportation mds forming clots. Symptoms of low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) include easy bruising gum and nose bleeding as well as bleeding in the digestive tract or blood vessels.

How is CLL diagnosed?

An immunophenotyping test can identify specific characteristics of cancer cells. In this test, a small amount of cells is passed through a machine that detects a specific feature on each cell. If the cells have that surface feature, a screen will be lit up when examined through a microscope. This can aid the doctor to determine the nature and stage of leukemia.

In some instances, a diagnostic imaging test is used to determine the location of the leukemia. A computed tomography scan (CT) can determine whether leukemia has been found in lymph nodes of the chest, abdomen or pelvis. It is crucial to be aware that the risk of getting this type of leukemia may increase with long-term exposure to herbicides. CLL is more common among railroad workers who are exposed to herbicides such as 2,4-D or paraquat.
