CSX Transportation

CSX Transportation operates the railroad division of the holding company, which owns a number of rail and non-rail assets. The company was founded by the gradual merger between the Chessie System Railroad Corporation and the Seaboard System Railroad Corporation.

History

The current CSX Transportation system was built in the late 1980s, through a series of acquisitions. Following the merger, CSX quickly began expanding its coverage across the eastern United States. It bought the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac Railroad Lawsuits in 1993, and then acquired roughly half of Conrail (the remaining half was purchased by Norfolk Southern Railway).

In the mid-1990s it had a rail network covering 23 states east of the Mississippi River and two Canadian provinces. Its system provided access to over 70 ocean, lake and river port terminals along the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts as well as the Mississippi River and Great Lakes.

CSX also became involved in intermodal transport with its acquisition of CSL Intermodal Corporation, and Rockresorts, Inc. It also tried out an initiative called Pride in Service, which resulted from special painted locomotives in honor of the first responders and veterans of the nation. Hays T.Watkins was the company's CEO and chairman was forced to step down in 1989 due to the lack of rail profits and a stagnant share price and issues with new acquisitions. John W. Snow launched an ambitious plan to increase the margins of real estate and shipping and refocus operations on the company's strengths.

Operations
