Canadian Pacific Laryngeal Cancer

We examined the relationship between HPV status, sex and age at diagnosis in 148 patients who were diagnosed with laryngeal cancer that was invasive between 1993 between 1993 and 2004. All patients were part of the Hawaii Tumor Registry, the Iowa Cancer Registry, and the Los Angeles County Cancer Surveillance Program each of which are part of the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End-Results (SEER) program.

The majority of cases were squamous cancers, and the majority were early stage (localized) disease. Men accounted for 82% of the laryngeal carcinoma patients, while women constituted 18%. In a crude analysis of the data, no significant differences were seen in the distribution of HPV status by sex or histological type; however there was a connection between sex and the year of diagnosis in which more women than men diagnosed in 1993-1998 were HPV positive.
