The origins of the card

The design

The technology

The keyless entry system

The hands free card of Renault was a groundbreaking piece of technology when it was launched 20 years ago. The exterior of the card is identical, but the technology has been improved to make it easier to use and harder to hack.

It can't be used from outside to unlock doors or start the car until the driver has activated it. This is because radio antennae "around the car" are configured to detect whether the key is inside or outside. The key can still function from a distance to turn on the car's ignition but not to unlock the doors, which is to ensure your safety.

The second thing is that the wireless remote control transmissions of the system employ a rolling-code. This reduces the risk of someone intercepting the control message and then retransmitting it in order to gain access, but does not remove it. [1]
