Pragmatic Genuine Philosophy

Pragmatism places emphasis on experience and context. It could be lacking a clear set of foundational principles or a cohesive ethical framework. This could result in a loss of idealistic aspirations and transformative change.

Unlike deflationary theories of truth, pragmatic theories of truth do not deny the idea that statements relate to current events. They merely explain the role truth plays in everyday endeavors.

Pragmatic is a term that is used to describe people or things who are practical, logical, and sensible. It is often used to differentiate between idealistic, which is an idea or person that is founded on ideals or high principles. When making decisions, the pragmatic person considers the real world and the conditions. They concentrate on what is feasible instead of trying to find the ideal course of action.

These pragmatists from the classical period focused on the theory of inquiry, meaning and the nature of truth. Their influence grew to many influential American thinkers, such as John Dewey (1860-1952), who applied their theories to education and social improvement in other dimensions. Jane Addams (1860-1935) was the social work pioneer who created social work, also benefited from this influence.

In recent years, a new generation has given pragmatism a wider platform for discussion. Although they differ from the classic pragmatists these neo-pragmatists consider themselves to be part of the same tradition. Their main figure is Robert Brandom, whose work is centered around semantics and the philosophy of language but also draws upon the philosophy of Peirce and James.

Neopragmatists have an entirely different perception of what is required for an idea to be real. The classical pragmatists focused on a concept called 'truth-functionality,' which states that an idea is genuinely true if it is useful in practice. Neo-pragmatists focus on the idea of 'ideal warranted assertion,' which says that an idea is true if a claim about it can be justified in a specific manner to a specific audience.

There are, however, a few issues with this perspective. It is often accused of being used to support unfounded and silly ideas. However it has been reclaimed from obscurity by a diverse variety of philosophers, including Richard Rorty, Cornel West and Robert Brandom. These philosophers, while not being classical pragmatists have a lot in common with the philosophy and work of Peirce James and Wittgenstein. Their writings are worth reading for anyone interested in this philosophy movement.
