Norfolk Southern Railway's Six-Point Plan to Enhance Safety

This technology utilizes cameras placed at strategic locations to provide 360-degree "health check" of every car. As opposed to traditional visual inspections it is able to detect invisible defects like worn bearings that would be difficult to spot using the naked eyes.

The company is also planning to increase the number of hot bearing detectors. These devices use sensors to detect heat within axles and alert when they are nearing failure. It will also work with its peers to discuss best practices for the use of these devices.

Technology

The company's technology includes a unique track-condition monitoring system. It uses components available commercially (gyros and accelerometers, as well as global positioning system sensors) for monitoring track conditions in real time.
