Choosing a Large Bedside Cot

Bedside cots (also known as co-sleepers and bassinets) are designed to allow parents to snuggle with their infant at night without the risk of SIDS. They are only recommended up to 6 months, when your baby is old enough to move to the bed.

MFM home tester Mehack was impressed that this model comes with a bassinet that can be lifted off to use around the house and a manual rocking function. It was also simple to put together and came in its own bag for easy storage.

Size

Cots are smaller than cots. They can also be converted into toddler beds, while they are typically used up to three years old. There are two sizes of wooden cots - big and standard - which can be converted into a toddler bed or cot. If you wish for your child (or children) to be capable of sleeping in a larger cot, it's a good idea to choose the larger size.

MFM mother home test Jasmine liked that this bedside cot was a little bigger than the Moses basket but not too big for her baby's room. She says it's easy to lift her baby into and out of the cot for nighttime feeding or soothing and the quality is top-notch when compared to other cots she's seen that are flimsy.

Another home tester, Emily, likes how the Maxi-Cosi is a versatile product - it's a lift-off bassinet that can be moved around the home, and it's rocking too. It also comes with a reflux incline option and a machine-washable breathable liner. It was also shortlisted for the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards in the Best Cot or Moses Basket category. The Lora is compatible with a South African cot mattress unlike many international or European brands. This means that you don't need to buy an entirely new mattress each time your baby grows. Height

When selecting a bedside crib make sure it can be adjusted to a suitable height for you. It must also be lower out of the way, so you can raise your baby towards you to feed them at night or to soothe him. This feature is particularly useful in the event of recovering from an operation such as a C-section. For example the Next2me and Tutti Bambini cots can be adjusted to a height of 58cm while the Snuzpod 3 goes up to 63cm, and the Knuma Huddle up to 70cm.

You should also think about the height you'd like the base of your crib to be. While some mums find it easier to lift their children out of the standard Moses baskets when they are at the lowest height, other mums prefer an elevated base to give them more stability. The Joie Roomie Glide is a popular choice with one of our mom testers saying that it has an easy-to-use collapsible side that you can press down at the touch of the button.

Remember that a bassinet/bedside sleeping device is only suitable when your baby can hold his head without assistance, which is usually around 6 months. This is because of the danger of suffocation. It is also important to remember that if you opt for a bedside sleeper or bassinet that you can convert into a cot and vice versa, you must remove the sides as soon as your child is ready for this, so that they don't get out of bed or get out of bed.

Design

There are a variety of styles of cribs for bedside use with a range of styles from simple to luxurious. The more expensive options could include features like an integrated night light, a soothing centre that plays music and sounds and has two levels of vibrations to help soothe your baby to sleep, or the swivelling base which allows you to reach your baby for feedings. Some models can be transformed into a toddler bed or cot bed (or both) when your child is ready for their own bed.

This makes it perfect for mothers who are recovering from Caesarean births or who require a the bed for extended periods of time. Jasmine, a MFM mum who tested this product at home, stated that it was simple to use and made it easier for her to reach her baby, especially after having a C-section.

Another alternative is the Chicco Next2me Magic, which won Gold at the 2021 Mother&Baby Award in the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket. It includes a machine-washable liner, reflux incline and rocking function. It's a bit bigger than some of the other cribs for bed we've tried, but it folds flat into its travel bag so it is relatively compact when not in use.

MFM mum home test Leya also appreciated the function of this cheap bedside cot crib, she explained how it was created with babies and parents in mind. It is lightweight and easy to move. She said that the bassinet's swivelling base was brilliant because it allowed you to move it from side to side. One of its sides could be lower to facilitate access, especially for new mums recovering from C-sections.

Safety

The bedside cot bed cot's primary security characteristic is the fact that it can easily be raised or lowered so parents can reach their child to feed or comfort him or their diaper. This means that it's ideal for mothers who are still recovering from a C section. Choose a model that lets you lower one side at the press of a button so you can effortlessly lift your baby without having to get out of bed. This is especially crucial as your baby grows older and becomes more mobile. Avoid adding anything that could increase the risk of injury or suffocation, such as duvets and pillowcases, which can cause your baby to become overheated.

The NPR released by the CPSC NPR included 24 incidents that were attributed to product problems like gaps between the bedside sleeper and the adult bed (12 incidents) and enclosed openings with fabric sides (11 incidents); consumer misassembly or missing components (6 incidents) and other miscellaneous product-related issues (9 incidents).

In its NPR the CPSC examined the possibility of adding more requirements to bedside sleepers. For example the products would need to meet the minimum height requirements for bassinets, or at the very least, the maximum height requirements for the rail that is lowered. However, the CPSC determined that these requirements are not feasible or effective to reduce the amount of instances in which infants were entrapped between the bedside crib vs cot sleeper and the adult bed.

Many of the incidents reported in the NPR focused on multi-use bedside sleepers which can be converted to other types of equipment, like bassinets or play yards. Several commenters suggested that the CPSC include in the proposed rule a different provision for multiuse Bedside Co Sleeper Cot sleepers to allow them to meet the minimum side-height requirements for bassinets by using an attachment that is removable and can be connected permanently or disconnected when the item is not being used as a bassinet.

The CPSC is reviewing these comments and others received in response to the NPR regarding bedside cot reviews sleeping. The Commission will consider these comments when deciding on the final rule, which is expected to be published in November of 2021.
