Railroad Cancers and Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Railroad workers who are exposed exhaust fumes are at risk of having an increased chance of developing leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndrome railroad cancer settlements syndrome and other blood cancers. Solvents like trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene used in the cleaning of railroad cars and locomotives could increase your risk as well.

In myelodysplastic disease blood stem cells are still in their infancy, and they don't mature into healthy white, red, or platelet blood cells. This causes a decrease in the count of blood types.

Exposure to occupational hazards

Railroad workers are exposed to many carcinogenic chemicals in their work environments. Many of these chemicals are linked to blood-cancers and Myelodysplastic Syndrome, including benzene.

Diesel fuel, as well as other chemicals like petroleum solvents, or degreasers in railroad shops, contain benzene. These chemicals can be taken into the body through breathing or by direct contact. These chemicals are absorb by the body through breathing or direct contact.

Trackmen are also exposed to the herbicide Roundup which is known to increase the risk of Myelodysplastic Syndrome and other leukemias for those exposed to large amounts of the product. Railroad workers who spray herbicides on railway tracks face a high risk.

Diesel exhaust fumes can cause Myelodysplastic Syndrome lawsuit Syndrome. The fumes contain contaminants like lead and mercury, which are dangerous to the health of humans in any amount. Additionally, they have been shown to increase the chances of developing leukemias and other blood cancers including non-Hodgkin's lupus and acute myeloidleukemia.

Railroad employees may sue their employers under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA). To win a FELA lawsuit, a worker must prove that their employer was negligent in some way.

Signs and symptoms

Myelodysplastic Syndrome is afflicted by abnormalities in the cells which create blood in the bone marrow. It is an older group of blood cancers. It's classified into subtypes based on the type of blood cells affected. A lower count of red blood cells may cause anemia, a condition that causes you to feel tired. The absence of white blood cells increase the risk of infection, and the absence of platelets means that you cannot properly clot, which can result in excessive bleeding. One in three people who have myelodysplastic disorder also develop leukemia.

The most frequent manifestation of myelodysplastic syndrome is fatigue. Other symptoms include a lowered fever, coughing, headache, and a decrease in appetite. If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, it is important to talk to your physician. They can conduct an MRI and blood test to determine if you have myelodysplastic syndrome.

Myelodysplastic syndrome is caused by the chemical benzene that is found in diesel fuel, petroleum and industrial solvents. Exposure to benzene could alter the cell structure and lead to changes that could cause the disease. This can result from long-term exposure to work and can occur at any age. Myelodysplastic syndrome has also been caused by exposure to pesticides and herbicides and chemotherapy drugs. Diagnosis

If you have MDS the cells that make up your bone marrow are damaged. Bone marrow is the soft tissue in your bones that produces blood cells. Your body is home to three types of blood cells namely red blood cells white blood cells, as well as platelets. White blood cells fight off infections while platelets assist in create clots. Your bone marrow can also produce immature cells. These blood cells that are immature can either develop into healthy blood cells, or they could develop into leukemia.

The doctor will perform tests that test the bone marrow and blood to determine the cause of your disease. Treatment

Rail workers who are diagnosed with leukemia or other blood cancers of different types, are entitled to compensation. The money can be derived from a lawsuit brought under the Federal Employers Liability Act. FELA is designed to protect railroad workers who have suffered injuries or railroad even died due to their employers' negligence. For instance the case where a worker was exposed to dangerous chemicals such as benzene because of working in or around diesel-powered locomotives and other railroad equipment, the railroad may be held liable for the injuries suffered by this employee.

In MDS the cells in bone marrow which produce blood change and don't grow normally. In the end, the number of healthy red blood cells and railroad white blood cells as well as platelets (cells that aid in blood clotting) is reduced, which results in low blood counts. The majority of cases of MDS are mild and do not progress to acute myelogenous lukemia However, around one-third of the cases progress to AML in the same way that many cancers advance.

MDS can be treated using chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation. The chemotherapy kills the cancerous cells and stem cells, which are immature blood cells that can develop into any type of blood cell, and replace them. The new blood cells can also repair the damage caused by chemotherapy. They are healthier than cancerous cells.
