Myelodysplastic disorders occur when blood-forming cells found in the bone marrow become abnormally. These cells are responsible for the production of red blood cells white blood cells, and platelets.

Doctors diagnose MDS by examining the bone marrow and blood samples. They also test your immune system and genetics to see whether you have any genetic changes that could increase your chances of getting MDS.

Most MDS cases are unknown. It can happen when you get older or as a result of radiation therapy or chemotherapy treatment for a different type of cancer. MDS can also be passed on by your parents. Some people are at higher MDS risk if they have experienced long-term exposure to benzene. Diagnosis
