The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot hoover can vacuum and mop without needing your attention, and it will leave your floors spotless. Its price is affordable and its high-end functions (such as a dirt detector) are positives.

Like other premium iRobots (including the top model) they employ intelligent mapping to design precise floor plans and eliminate household obstacles like cords and furniture leg. They also feature carpet boost that increases the robot's power when it spots the presence of dirt on the carpet to get it cleaned up quickly.

The Q5 and Q7 Max Series both scored extremely well in our tests on bare floors and are especially adept at cleaning hair from dogs. However, they have several flaws that prevent them from being our top choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation system does not include AI-powered obstacle avoidance, so it's prone to become entangled in shoes and socks and can't navigate tight spaces very efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with cameras that let it see the corners of an area.

It's still a great deal for those whose home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you want to save money. It's also very quiet and you can use it while you're at work, or school. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective in mopping, relying on disposable wet wipes, which don't stick on well and aren't able to take on dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. And, if you have to change the mopping pad to a dry one in seconds.

2. IRobot Roomba

The iRobot Roomba X30 is a compact elegant vacuum cleaner that can mop floors. Its intelligent cleaning maps and fluid navigation make it simple to clean and effective in tackling larger particles like pet hair. It also features an impressive suction system and a self-emptying bin. It's the best robot hoover for carpets but it isn't as effective as some of its competitors when it comes to deep cleaning.

This top-performing mop and vacuum combo uses advanced sensor technology to avoid obstacles and pet waste and it learns your home's layout over time to ensure more efficient cleaning. The app lets you modify zones and alter the cleaning schedule. Its battery life is average in comparison to similar models.

It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when it's in a carpeted area, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is perfect to get under furniture with low levels and along baseboards. It's not as effective on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

It also did an excellent job cleaning a variety of rooms and floors with mixed flooring types, including some area carpets. Its obstacle detection was great and it was able to avoid fake dog turds and socks, shoes, and bundles of cables.

It's a bit more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, but it has superior suction, an onboard dustbin that automatically emptys into its base, and also supports voice commands using Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums, a feature that hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek circular design that appears more like a normal Roomba than the competition's boxy units, this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive looking models in our tests. iRobot’s latest flagship model is also among its most advanced. It comes with advanced features, like enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads autonomously).

It's also the only robot vacuum/mop to score an absolute 10 out of 10 in our testing. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only good robot vacuum we tested that could refill and empty its basestation autonomously. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mops.

The X40, like other iRobot products, is easy to use. It comes with an easy mobile app interface that is compatible with Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. The only real drawback is that it's still quite an eerily noisy device that could be problematic if you run it in the morning before work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also a bit costly, but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are equally impressive and attractive. If you're willing to put up with a little more noise and some additional cost it's a efficient two-in-one device that should delight most.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is the top-of-the high-end robot vacuum and mop. It has a range of advanced features that make you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine that is similar to Ecovacs' top-of-the-range X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically emptys the bin of the vacuum and fills up the water tank, and cleans and drys the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to create floorplans and identify obstacles. It can navigate more efficiently than its top competitors. It also comes with a front-mounted camera for real-time detection of hazards, although this wasn't quite 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum cleaner has a maximum suction of 7,000 Pascals which is more than sufficient to accomplish the task. It also comes with a feature called "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the power of the vacuum and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house depending on how dirty the areas are.

If you have a bigger home, it is worth choosing a model that has the option of cleaning zones or spots. This lets you instruct the robot on which part of your home must be cleaned using the app or voice command. A stair mode can be useful if you have a large furniture. For busy families, a recharge function and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to continue from where it left off could be very useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price would suggest. It does a stellar job cleaning, removing 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad and a reciprocating motion which is cleaner than the majority of the robot mop cleaners that we've examined. It's also self-sufficient with a fully-featured application, and a self emptying, washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app guides you through a mapping exercise that collects information about your floorplan and any "no-go" areas you set on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules or to create the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas to improve performance. The app also provides access to many features, such as seasonal suggestions, custom maps and advanced settings for your cleaning.

Its shape is more rectangular than most other robot vacuums, meaning it can get to corners and underneath furniture better. It also has a strong 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for hair of pets. And you can create a spot-clean that thoroughly cleans a particular area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD offers a sleeker and less expensive alternative to iRobot Roomba. It's got a more attractive, Dolce & Gabbana-esque design and its twin cameras resemble cute eyes. It is excellent at vacuuming, but it's more likely to get caught in low thresholds. It also has a higher noise than other top robot vacuums that we have test. It also has a less intuitive app and a small base station that isn't able to double as a bin for emptying.
