Conley Monk is a 74-year-old Marine Corps veteran from the Vietnam War who filed the lawsuit. According to records obtained by Monk and the Yale Law School veterans disability lawyer Legal Services Clinic and Monk claims that the VA denied his disability claim at a greater rate than white veterans in the last three decades.

Monk, a former psychiatric nurse, claims that discrimination by VA has caused him, as well as other black vets to suffer in a manner that has affected their health, their home lives and employment as well as education. He is requesting that the VA compensate him for benefits he has been deprived of and to alter its policies on race as well as discharge status and denial rates.

Discrimination based on PTSD

The veterans disability litigation Affairs Department systematically denies disability benefits to Black veterans, according to a lawsuit filed on Monday. The suit is filed by an ex- Marine Corps vet who was denied housing or education, as well as other benefits despite suffering from undiagnosed PTSD. This discrimination against blacks was widespread and pervasive, according to the lawsuit filed on his behalf by the National Veterans disability lawsuit Council for Legal Redress and the veterans disability lawyers Legal Services Clinic at Yale Law School. The lawsuit asserts that the VA was aware of but did not deal with decades-long discrimination against Black veterans. It seeks justice for Monk and similar veterans.
