Replacing a Toyota Key

There are many options to consider in the event that your Toyota key fob is damaged. If the internal electronics of your Toyota are in good condition the service center can make a new key at less cost.

If the case is also damaged, it will need to be replaced. If the case appears intact, you can try opening it using the key hidden in the case or a small tool at the notch that is visible. Then, gently lift the circuit board until you can see the battery.

Toyota offers some of the most advanced, technologically advanced car keys available on the market. Transponder chips communicate with the vehicle and block the vehicle from starting without authorization. They also lock the engine in case the wrong key is used. Smart Keys

Smart key technology may allow you to start your Toyota without ever needing to remove your keys from your purse or pocket. Smart keys allow you to store different driver settings and open windows or sunroofs remotely. They could also have a feature that allows you to set limits on speed when your teenager is driving.

You must be within 10 feet to use the smart key. When you're close enough the vehicle will activate the courtesy lights and then open the door for the driver or passenger. The trunk can be locked by pressing the button on the key fob. Many modern smart keys come with a telescoping key blade to accommodate your different hand sizes and offer greater flexibility in reaching the lock and ignition buttons.

As with traditional car keys the smart key fob contains an embedded transponder chip that transmits an encrypted signal when you hit the lock or unlock buttons. It's designed to deter thieves from stealing or hot-wiring your vehicle by removing the engine immobilizer. However, there are a few limitations to this method. A skilled criminal can employ a scanner device to find the code, and then transmit it to a key fob.

A smart key that is newer such as the Mercedes Benz SmartKey uses a unique method known as rolling code. A computer inside the vehicle is able to check the unique code every time you insert the key. This prevents unauthorized use, since it is difficult for the scanner to read the same codes for rolling repeatedly.

If your smart key isn't responding to the lock or unlock buttons, it could be due to a dead battery. The circuit board can be removed from many fobs to replace the battery. Take a picture of the old battery, and make a note where the new battery will be placed inside the case. This will help you put it together correctly. When you receive a new battery, you need to remove the old one from the case and replace it with the new. Avoid touching the flat surfaces of your battery.
