How to Replace an audi a3 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor
In this video, Charles the Humble Mechanic demonstrates how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated near the edges of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster. 1. Engine Speed SensorThe grey wire is situated at the edges of the transmission, above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then uses this information to control the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer in instrument cluster. The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can trigger spark and injectors accordingly. If this sensor fails the ECU will display a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the code won't appear on its own without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40). It is a little tricky to test because there are various connector pins, and each has its own functions. The best way to do it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read about 1000 ohms when it is in full operation. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay. 2. Injectors Yesterday, when i was accelerating to the fullest speed from highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is out of gas or the injectors are not firing at all. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched with gazoline the fourth one was dry. When I crank the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on the top of each of the injector holes and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays closed. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. i get 0ohm. So i assume the problem is somewhere else. I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and it runs perfectly when it is connected however it is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even when it is unplugged, shows a temperature of -49c. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit is showing 2 bar when the actual pressure is 0.0 when I crank up the engine. I don't know what to do. I think I've all other possibilities out. But i am afraid I might have missed something. Let me know should you have any suggestions! TIA! 3. Fuel Pump The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily locate the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them by putting your DMM in resistance mode and measure the resistance between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black connector's end). They must be infinite Ohms. 4. ECU Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that needs to know the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this.
