Mesothelioma is a rare, but fatal illness that is caused by exposure to asbestos fibers that collect in the lungs and cause irritation to the lining of the chest cavity, ribcage and abdominal cavity (the the pleura). Inhaling these tiny fibers can cause scarring to the lungs known as asbestosis and sometimes the development of thickened patches on the pleura referred to as plaques on the pleura, or the more widespread fibrosis of the pleura known as diffused fibrosis. Pleural plaques or diffuse fibrosis can reduce lung capacity as determined by a breathing test. They also cause pain and difficulty breathing but they don't cause mesothelioma or cancer.

Most of the time, symptoms of asbestos-related diseases do not show up until decades after the initial exposure. This is because it could take between 20 to 50 years for inhalation of asbestos-containing fibers to cause lung damage. Workers who handled, cleaned and removed asbestos from the workplace as well as children, spouses, and others exposed to asbestos are at risk of developing mesothelioma.

Other asbestos-related diseases, in addition to mesothelioma, include laryngeal cancer and lung cancer and peritoneal, ovarian and peritoneal cancer. The most fatal form of mesothelioma is ovarian cancer, but it's less prevalent than mesothelioma in general. It is diagnosed later than other mesothelioma types, because it develops in the linings of reproductive organs. The symptoms can be similar to those of other illnesses.
