Toto was formed in the year 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro, David Paich (who at the time were also well-known studio musicians with Boz Scaggs) and bassist/singer Bobby Kimball. After a brief hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. The album is a departure from the ballads on previous albums, and features some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

During the recording of the band's fifth album the band loses their manager and are financially in trouble. They decide to change their name and record a new album with the new producer.
