WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give a guaranteed boost to specific stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by +3. A random additional substat is also boosted alongside each upgrade.

The upgraded gear is usually more valuable, unless the item upgrade has a low requirement by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). Upgrades are not as useful for the latter due to the need to roll the perfect version.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any kind of weapon or armor. The item level upgrade used to upgrade the item is discarded and cannot be used again. Upgrades can be applied to enchantments.

The upgrader is located in every major city, and can be accessed at any time to upgrade your equipment. To keep your gear current, it is recommended that you visit the upgrader every few weeks.

Upgrades will cost more, based on the level of the item level upgrade, but they will always be less expensive than purchasing new gear. For example upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points, purchasing a similar piece from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that are used to level up weapons, tools, armor, and other accessories. They can be purchased by players through item upgrading upgrader NPCs in exchange for a variety of currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be applied to any weapon, tool, or armor. The button will show a preview of an item's next level of upgrade, in the event that there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrading is based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than gloves or bracers, for example. Each step costs 15 Flightstones and a number of crests, with some upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of the Flightstones or crests used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain amount and is degraded, it can be sold and returned to the upgrader for a lesser amount of the two currency types.

Many locations offer item upgraders which include the main island and some outposts. The NPCs provide an upgrade discount as well as a chance to obtain a new upgrade recipe. The discount on upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It can also be boosted by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at beginning, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. Instead the NPCs that are available to help with upgrades require various methods, which is both an improvement but also a drawback.

In Season 3 the upgrade system has been tweaked a bit, with several new features added. When a player has an upgrade to a specific item level for a particular armor slot, upgrading further items to the same level will cost less even in the event that they belong to another set of gear.

Crests

When upgrading equipment in WoW, players have a couple of choices. Flightstones are a currency that is available to everyone for upgrading. It's also essential to use crests in a wise manner, as they only have one use. This is especially relevant for items like trinkets and rings that fill several slots. The discount for the entire account is only applicable when all slots on the character are filled with high-quality equipment.
