Charles the Humble Technician teaches you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located near the transmission's edge over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 via a grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 tachometer in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to link the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft has reached TDC and also where the camshaft lies in order to activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error message. This means that the Crank Shaft is not in line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also be a sign of the possibility of a chain stretch or jumped chain link in the upper timing chain. The code will not appear without the additional information provided by other sensors (G4 or G40).

It is a little tricky to test because there are different pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best way to do it is by measuring the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. If the sensor is operational, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating from the highway paytoll at maximum speed I noticed a significant reduction in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. In the morning, i removed the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the 4th one was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each hole in the injector and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the 3 with gazoline jump right out. The 4th one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. Therefore, i think the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset PID but without success. The car can start if the G28 is disconnected and is running fine when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62), even if it is not plugged in, shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar but the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not certain what to do, as i feel i have pretty much ruled out everything else. I'm afraid i may have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump on the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style sender is the same as the G4 and they both work in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a wrecking yard or from a parts store. It is easy to test them - simply switch your DMM into resistance mode and determine the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing up). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

The ECU of our 20vt turbo (3B AAN ABY) engines needs to know both the position and speed of the crankshaft to determine timing of the fuel injector, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this. A failing G28 sensor could cause an inaccurate speed counter for the gearbox or a gearbox that shifts more quickly than normal, or an unfire when in the gear. 5. Tachometer

A malfunctioning engine speed sensor could be a cause for many issues in your vehicle. This sensor can cause the transmission to malfunction and other car components to be affected.

The G5 engine speed sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear and sends a signal directly to the ECU at pin T55/49, via a grey wire. The ECU uses this signal to regulate the amount of fuel and boost, and also to timigrate. It also sends it to the G5 Tachometer inside the instrument cluster. You can check the sensor for any failure by checking the continuity between it and the tachometer, between ECU pin T55/49 and the instrument cluster connection to pin T6a/1 (trace [79]) and between pin T6a/1 and the instrument cluster pin T26a/12. You should see the resistance to be around 1000 ohms in these areas.
