Line-up

Turn Back, the band's third studio album, was an attempt to return to the classic sextet format and it was a more consistent, more powerful effort that had a more grittier edge. Its edgier sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's improved ability on the drums and a more mature, confident vocal delivery from singer Joseph Williams. Keyboardist David Paich's work was more precise, sharper, and less derivative than on previous performances.

After touring to promote their album, the group recorded the band's Amsterdam live concert that was released on Eagle Records as a 2-CD set entitled Falling In Between. The group released a new studio album a few months after and embarked on a world tour to promote it. During this time keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.

In 1998, Paich & Lukather began looking through old tapes and demos to find songs that hadn't been recorded before. It was completed as a double-album titled Then And Now in 2001. It was the first album in the band's history that did not include any single song that had the word "A" in its title and it included one previously unreleased track, "Kari-Anne".

By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial flop and vocalist Williams suffered from a bad laryngitis infection which limited his singing capabilities. Hungate also returned to Nashville and Leland Sklar's drumming was replaced by Shem Von Schroeck.

Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the original members of Asia The original Asia members met in England early in 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald and a backing vocalist named Mabvuto Carver.
