Changing the Battery in Your Mazda 3 Key Fob

It's a pain to pull into your car at the end of a long workday and discover that the key fob is dead. This is a simple fix that can be done at a major box retailer or at a hardware store.

A spare key fob for your Mazda 3 is an inexpensive alternative to not having to be towed to a dealer to have them reprogram the keys.

Battery Replacement

You can replace the battery on your Mazda Card Key 3 keyfob at home. It is recommended to replace it when the battery goes out or if you see a message saying "Low keyfob battery" on the multi-information display. Replace battery."

To open the key fob case, you'll need a tape-wrapped flathead screwdriver and a bit of patience. Locate a notch or gap in the bottom portion of the metal of your Mazda 3's key fob and then insert the tip of the screwdriver into it to remove the lower part. Repeat the process for the top part of the metal however, be careful not to damage the rubber ring at bottom of the key fob's case.

Take out the old CR2025 and replace it with a new mazda key one, ensuring that you place it face-up to ensure the correct orientation. Finally, put the cap of the battery back on and reattach both sides to the key fob's case. Continue pressing until you hear them click.

After you've replaced the battery, test the fob to confirm it is working by locking and unlocking your doors. If everything appears to be working the mazda smart key 3 remote features can be used again.

Pairing Issues

This could be a sign that the transmitter in your car may have been damaged. This usually requires a professional to repair and will likely need a new key fob.

Interference signals can affect the remote key fob signal from the vehicle and cause it to not function properly. This could be caused by objects like weather conditions, buildings, and transmitters that use the same frequency. Interference can occur when your vehicle is equipped with aftermarket equipment that transmits at the same frequency as your key fob.

The key fob could be damaged if it is exposed to salt water or water. The water can penetrate the rubber seals of the electronic chip particularly if the key fob is submerged in water for a long duration. This could cause the chip to stop working and may require replacement of the key fob. If you have a programmeable key cleaning the chip using isopropyl alcohol or an electronic cleaner to aid in its return to functionality. If this doesn't work you can be sure that the chip has fried and must be replaced.

Locking or Unlocking the Doors

The buttons on the key fob send electronic signals to a solenoid inside the car, which transforms the signal into a mechanical action that locks and unlocks the doors. If your door lock does not work it could be due to an issue with the solenoid. This will require expert repair shops to look into.

A dead 12 volt battery could also prevent the fob from functioning properly. This could happen if your battery fails to charge or if the contacts are corrosion-prone. The problem can be addressed in minutes with a new battery.

The receiver module may be the problem if the key fob doesn't work after replacing the battery or program the device. This device detects radio frequency signals sent by the key fob to control the vehicle. It can be expensive to repair if it malfunctions.

To verify if this is true, place your spare key into the key slot. Then turn the ignition ON. Press the key fob button two times in a matter of 10 seconds without removing it.
