How to Repair Bifold Door Top Roller Guide

If your bifold doors are sticking to the wall, they might need a little maintenance. They might need to be cleaned and lubricated or adjusted. The issue could be caused by an unfastened screw on the top pivot or the top roller guide.

The majority times you can resolve these issues by making a few simple adjustments, without having to remove the doors. One of the most common issues that internal bifold door replacement doors face is that they are sliding out of alignment. This can be caused by loose screws, holes in the anchor/pivot pins or simply a door that isn't aligned properly. The majority times this can be fixed with a few simple adjustments. It is likely that you will need to use a bit of force to get the guide off, but be cautious not to break or chip the foot. Once you have separated the old guide from the rod blank, be sure to remove all of the threads and epoxy that remain in the place where it was attached. This will help prevent any future problems with the guide.

After removing the previous guide, test your replacement by putting it in its permanent position. Apply a few rotations using masking tape or guide tubing to ensure it stays in place. This will allow you to double verify the guide's spacing and alignment to ensure everything is set up properly. Remove the Bottom Pivot

Bifold doors are a stunning feature for any home, but sometimes they need a little tweaking or adjustment to stay in top shape. Some issues can be resolved with the doors still in place. Others will require that the doors be removed. This guide will guide you through how to remove internal bifold door pivots, pins and rollers so you can get your doors sliding as new.

The first step is to gather your tools. Making sure you have everything in place prior to time will save you some frustration later in the process. You'll need a screwdriver pliers, and possibly a wrench. A set of basic tools can be bought at a reasonable price from your local hardware store. It's important to have some wood glue handy. This can be very useful in the event that you need to fix any of the rollers back into place.

After putting together your tools then open the bifold doors and loosen the top track bracket by using your screwdriver. Once this is loose the door should be free to slide off the top track completely. It might take a bit of shaking but it should eventually pop off the track.

Next, you'll need to remove the bottom pivot from the frame. Close all doors to the interior before beginning. This will make it much simpler than trying to work from the inside. If the repairing bottom of bifold door track still looks good you can lift the door up and remove the track.

You will need to replace the track if it's damaged. You can get new tracks for bifold doors and swinging closet doors from your local hardware store. If the track is badly damaged, you might need to replace it completely.

After your track has been repaired or replaced, you'll need to check the doors for proper operation. Make sure they're able to move smoothly between positions. You'll want to make sure that the edges of your door are parallel to the frame when closed. If they're not, you'll have to adjust the top pivot bracket by tightening or loosening the bottom setscrew.

Replace the Roller

Bifold doors are a great way to enclose closets, laundry nooks and pantries, but only if they function properly. A top nylon replacement guide with a 7/8 " diameter wheel and a steel base is available from Stanley, Cox or Acme. It is mounted at the top edge of bifold doors that are 1 inch to 1-3/8 inch thick. It comes spring-loaded and self-adjusts in the upper track to ensure smooth sliding.

Another issue with bifold doors is that it scrapes the floor when it is closed or opened. This is often the result of adding carpet or other flooring materials that require the doors to be raised slightly to allow for clearance. Removal of the bottom pivot adjustment screw and loosening the top track's mounting screws and moving the anchor pin usually enough to clear this issue.

A new set of top roller guides is a cheap solution to a problem that may make your bifold doors difficult to operate. They're usually available at your local hardware store in the door section but they're also available online from a number of sellers. In addition to a new top guide for rollers, you'll require a small bottle of Elmer's wood glue which is sold in large box stores, as well as a squeeze clamp. The clamp is used to keep the repair bifold door bottom pivot area tightly closed after the glue has been inserted and allowed to dry.
