Buying a Pram Newborn

Safety

Newborns need to be secured as much as possible. Buying a pram or stroller equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is comfortable and secure while traveling. The essential requirements for any pram or stroller are a functioning brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, two waist straps, and the Crotch strap) and a wrist tether strap for the person who is pushing the pram. Verify that the stroller you select is in compliance with these requirements.

Find a stroller that allows your infant to ride in the recommended lying flat position. This position supports your baby and helps prevent the development of a risky spinal curve that can lead to spinal issues. By keeping the airways open, it decreases the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). Most prams are able to be used from the moment of birth. They have a seat unit which reclines into a lay-flat position for infants. It can also be converted to a pushchair for older children.

The suspension of the pram will determine how smoothly it is. A pram with many suspensions is likely to be more expensive but it could be worth paying for this feature if you intend on using your pram everyday for a couple of years or more.

Always be sure to read the instruction manual thoroughly and examine the warning labels for your pram or stroller. Also, ensure that your stroller is placed in a safe location away from traffic, bicycles or any other dangers when it's not being used. It is recommended to take any bags or other items off the handles, as they could cause your baby to get trapped or even suffocate.

A pram with car seat or stroller should not be left alone with a baby in it even if they're asleep. They could get squirming into the stroller and become stuck, or be pushed away and cause injuries. Hanging bags, or other items from the handles isn't a good thing as they can fall and hit your child in the head.

Comfort

Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute essential for infants as it promotes better back and lung development. A lot of prams come with a carrycot or cocoon that creates a warm nest-like space for your newborn and can be easily removed from the frame. Other models, such as the egg2's bucket-style seat don't recline to lie flat, but provide a comfy ride for your baby.

Some prams also feature an additional bassinet, infant inset or stroller seat so you can easily switch between sleeping and sitting modes according to your baby's requirements. This is often called a 'compact travel pram system' and is the first thing you should do with your baby.

Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps (ideally padded) and a sturdy five-point safety harness that fits your child's body safely. Be sure that there aren't any gaps or areas that are loose where fingers could get trapped and that the buckles are simple to use, especially for older children. It's also worth considering whether you'd prefer a parent facing pram or not. It's great for keeping an eye on your little one and helps them feel reassured by the familiarity of their parents.

When purchasing a newborn pram, it is crucial to think about the needs of your baby's transportation. Some prams include the option of a carrycot or bassinet which allow your baby to lie flat (essential for their spinal development and breathing) while others come with a seat that can recline into a flat position. It is important to check the other accessories that are included in the pram, such as the footmuff and the changing bag. These are essential for keeping your baby warm when it is cold.

It's also worth noting that some prams and strollers can be transformed into travel systems allowing you to connect a car capsule with the frame via adaptors so that you can easily move your baby between the car and the pushchair car seat without having to get them up. These are useful for those who have a hectic life or don't have a sufficient space for a pram capsule, although it's worth keeping in mind that your baby will need to be old enough and able to sit up independently before you can change between the car capsule and pram.

Another feature to consider is the ability to raise and lower the infant's seat from a low to a high setting, which allows you to maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you. You should also be able to store bags for shopping and changing in the basket underneath. It should be possible to store bags for changing and shopping under the pram (but remember that too much weight can cause it to tip over).
