The Night's Watch's camp at the Fist of the First Men arrives beneath assault and is overrun by an military of wights sent by the Others, with Sam one of the survivors who regulate to break out. On Samwell's fifteenth birthday, Randyll force him to join the Night's Watch and renounce his birthright of heir to Horn Hill, threatening death if he was to refuse. When Stannis, discouraged by the Night's Watch's messy politics, threatens to dictate a Lord Commander himself if the Watch are unable to choose on a chief within just the next several times, Sam decides to approach Mallister and Pyke (who despise each individual other) independently, claiming that Stannis designs to identify the other as Lord Commander, and suggesting that they both of those assist Jon as compromise candidate alternatively. Sam is unable to outrun the army of the dead, but for mysterious causes their chief spares Sam.

Arriving back at Castle Black, Sam warns Aemon of the advancing White Walkers, and Aemon has Sam send out the warning through the Seven Kingdoms. In the wildling assault on Castle Black, Olly shoots and kills Ygritte from at the rear of in revenge for his father. Later, Jon returns to Castle Black, gravely wounded and disguised as a Wildling. They get there to discover that Stannis Baratheon has arrived to the Night's Watch's assist and defeated Mance Rayder's Wildling army besieging Castle Black. During the voyage to Braavos, Gilly grows despondent, and Sam realises that Jon experienced swapped Gilly's baby with Mance Rayder's newborn son lest he be sacrificed as very well. Sam and Grenn then regroup with the other survivors at Craster's Keep, where by Gilly gives beginning to a son. He then gets a place of watch character in the 3rd novel A Storm of Swords and the fourth novel A Feast for Crows, with complete of 10 chapters informed from his position of perspective.
