Dr Bateman

Dr Bateman worked on a range of clinical research projects. These range from basic research using stable-isotope-labeled peptides, to clinical studies that are translational of diagnostic and therapeutic Biomarkers for Alzheimer's Disease. She has been a key advisor to more than 20 junior faculty members, postdoctoral students, and graduate student, many of whom went on to pursue their dream medical and science careers.

Her expertise lies in the diagnosis and treatment of neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ASD & ADHD, including those with intellectual disabilities. In June of 2016, a woman named Miss Kelly told an psychiatric community nurse she wanted to commit suicide. She refused to be held under the Mental Health Act but agreed to an assessment of home treatment. The examiner, however, was concerned that she was a danger to herself or others. She was not convinced she was competent enough to consent.

The assessor then suggested that Miss Kelly should be held against the will of her. Miss Kelly was not keen on being in a unit so she contacted Dr Ramanathan Elayaperumal, her psychiatrist. He was a Consultant Psychiatrist with the Home Treatment Team at Essex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

In response to this recommendation, the Home Treatment Team conducted a comprehensive assessment of Miss Kelly's state mind and her current functioning. The evaluation included a detailed medical history and physical examination. The review also included a thorough psychological assessment, a family therapy assessment and a psychiatric diagnose interview.

According to the report Miss Kelly was afflicted by a range of mental health issues, such as bipolar disorder, bulimia, and anorexia. She was also abused by her husband and was an addict to drugs. Stress, anxiety and depression made her suffer more. She was also diagnosed with bipolar affective disorder and schizoaffective disorder.

Elayaperumal claims Medtronic discriminated against him in a deliberate way due to his race or national origin. He argues that Medtronic's low performance review in June 2000 and the inability to provide him with certain assignments for projects were motivated by national origin or racism animus. However there is no evidence to suggest that Medtronic's decisions were based on these factors. In addition, Elayaperumal's poor performance review didn't result in a reduction in his pay, benefits, or responsibilities.
