There are certain things you must be aware of prior to programming your own key fob. The first thing you need to know is that the process of programming is different for different models of cars.

Most modern cars are equipped with an immobilizer. This means that if you don't have the original key and you don't have it, you won't be in a position to start the car.

Keyless Entry System

Keyless entry systems can make your car more comfortable to drive, and also improve security by opening the doors and start the engine without having to search for your suzuki keys. The system utilizes radio frequencies to connect the key fobs to the receiver inside the car. The process is simple and does not require any special equipment or previous knowledge.

When you press a button on the key fob, it transmits a 40-bit code to a receiver in your vehicle. The receiver matches the code with a function number that tells it what action to do, such as opening the doors or rolling up the windows. The system is designed to stop others from using your key fob to open your vehicle since each transmitter has its own unique code.

Modern cars come with systems that automatically lock the car when you've walked away from it. This is useful when you are prone to forgetting things or worry about leaving your car unattended. These systems do not come without their faults. For instance, thieves are able to hack into these systems.

There are a few issues that can cause your keyless entry system and remote starter to fail to function properly. The most common issue is a dead battery inside your key fob battery replacement fob. If this is the case, try replacing the battery in your fob. If this does not fix the problem, you may require having your fob reprogrammed.

Keyless Start System

With this technology, drivers can start their engines without having insert the mechanical key. Instead, the fob sends an access code to the console which allows a series of electrical switches to activate the engine, causing it to start. Once the engine is running at a certain speed, a button on fob can be pressed to shut the motor off.

The system also includes protections to stop the car from beginning in gear or when a person is not in the vicinity of the steering column. The computer will verify that the transmission is in Park and the brake pedal has been pressed prior to allowing the car to start. It can also be set up to require a certain sequence of presses.

The transmitter is built into the fob, and its signal is picked by antennas inside and outside of the vehicle. These antennas, similar to those used by door locks, enable the car to detect when the fob is in range. When the receivers detect a signal, they disable the immobilizer, which allows the engine to rotate just like a regular key.

Keyless Remote Control

If your key fob doesn't work, it could be an issue with the physical part, like damaged battery connector contacts or a button. It could be a software issue that needs reconfiguring. Simple tests with a voltmeter or multimeter will reveal if the battery still in good condition and capable of running the microprocessor in the remote.

Key fobs that are newer use RFID (radio-frequency identification) to communicate with the car's computer. The key fob transmits a digital code and the car's computer stores it so that the key can be unlocked and start your vehicle.

The key fobs emit signals in the same radio frequency as a cellphone, and this technology is employed to remotely trigger certain car systems like lift gates to power or to start the engine from outside the vehicle. Fobs can also emit an alarming sound to frighten off thieves and other unwanted guests.

Batteries are the primary reason for the fob's key not working. Follow a few simple steps to reprogramme the fob in this situation.

Immobilizer

The Immobilizer, as you can guess from its name, prevents the vehicle from beginning without the key fob. The system uses LF (low-frequency 125 KHz) transmitting antennas, which are activated when the key fob is either pressed or its handle is pulled. The transponder chip inside the key fob is then able to transmit the ID back to the vehicle. The module that is aware of the vehicle's identity compares the key fob's ID with the one stored in the BCM and if they match the vehicle can start.

This system is very effective at deterring most carjackers, though it does not protect against the more technologically-advanced thieves. In a recent investigation, security researcher Bokslag was able to sneakily crack the Immobilizer on three vehicles belonging to popular brands within ten minutes of getting the keys.

The majority of older vehicles use a less reliable, simpler version of this system. It uses a single personal code, that is permanent, and a second code that is changed every time the ignition key is turned. Newer vehicles use an advanced, electronically-controlled Engine Immobilizer system that features two-tier security.

In order to reprogramme an authorized key, you will need the 7-digit SKC (Skip Key Code) number for your specific vehicle. This number is obtained from the dealer when you purchase your new Key Fob. You'll also require the Workshop Code and Importer number. The Immobilizer system usually is not affected by a disconnect of the battery however the Transponder ECU on the Key Fob will need to be reprogrammed using the OBDII port using the appropriate diagnostic tools.
