Buying a Pram Newborn

Prams and pushchairs are the multi-functional, multi-purpose companions of caregivers and parents. They are the co-pilots of your child's new journey.

A pram newborn is a must for newborns and babies. It has a deep, sturdy carrycot that has soft and secure walls.

A pram is equipped with a bassinet, however it can be converted to a stroller once the baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns need to be secured to the greatest extent possible. Buying a pram or stroller equipped with safety features will ensure that your baby is safe and secure during travel. The essential requirements for any stroller or pram are a functioning brake, a five-point safety harness (2 shoulder straps, two waist straps and an Crotch strap) and an adjustable wrist tether strap for the person pushing the pram. Be sure that the model you are considering is up to the standards before purchasing.

Find a pram that allows your baby to travel in the recommended lying-flat position. This position supports your baby and prevents the development of a risky curvature in their spine which could lead to spinal problems. Some prams come with an additional bassinet or seat for infants. This lets you effortlessly switch between sitting and sleeping positions based on what your baby needs. It is commonly described as a "travel system and is the first configuration you should try with your newborn.

Choose a stroller with two shoulder straps (ideally with padding) and a five-point safety harness that fits your bub's body safely. Be sure that there aren't any gaps or loose areas where fingers could become trapped, and that the buckles are simple to use, especially for older children. You should also consider if you'd like a parent-facing pram. It is great to keep an eye on your child and helps them feel more secure by being able to see their parents.

When buying a pram newborn it is important to consider your baby's needs for transport. Some prams include an infant bassinet, carrycot or a seat that reclines to a flat position. Another feature you may want to look out for is the possibility of raising and lowering your newborn's seat from a low to a high setting, which keeps eye contact with them and keeps them close to you, something that our parent tester found was extremely useful for her 10-month-old boy! Finally, make sure your pram newborn has a sturdy base and wheels that can withstand potholes and bumps. Ensure that you can fold it up easily and make sure the safety harness is in good working order, fits comfortably and securely (five-point instead of three-point) and is adjustable as your child grows. It should be possible to store bags for changing and shopping underneath the pram (but keep in mind that excessive weight could cause it to topple over).
