Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

The Hydra is not as popular among UK backpackers anymore possibly because they've gained popularity with brands that are more well-known or the most recent lightweight options from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean that it's less effective.

It is a lightweight and compact stove that burns all liquid fuels including propane butane, white gas and white gas using only one nozzle. It's a typical stove, with a burner attached to a body that is anchored by three fold-out support legs. The pump is on top of the fuel line, while the generator loop is wrapped around the inlet, and the flame spreader sits just above. The burner itself is a low-speed flame which makes it a little less affected by wind.

It's a versatile cooker as it can be used with propane canisters or isobutane canisters. It is simple to simmer with isobutane and propane, and it burns all fuels at a decent rate. However when using white gas, the stove is a little slower.

The instructions for the Hydra are written in English however they were not written by native users of the language. The instructions warn against the use of certain types of lighter fluid that if used in a manner that is not what is intended could lead to an accident that could result in Kovea in a lot of legal hot water. However, any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister made by a reputable manufacturer should work just fine.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be a great choice for those who are seeking a multifuel cooker that cooks using a variety of fuels. It can operate on gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type, and you can also adjust the flame size. The stove also has an fuel line that is flat on the ground and can be easily connected to the tank.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it requires maintenance to ensure it is operating correctly. Particularly it has a tendency to flare during priming, which could be risky. This is a problem that is common to all stoves with liquid fuel that utilize a secondary spindle on the stove's side instead of a coil to vaporize the fuel.

Another issue is the fact that it requires different jets for every type of fuel. This means that if you cook using kerosene, the jet hole has to be smaller than when cooking with gas. This is a minor issue however it's important to mention.

MSR Whisper Lite

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable multi fuel wood stove-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It can be run on canister liquid gas or fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new model is 10percent lighter than its predecessor and the burner has been revamped for improved heat distribution. This is an excellent choice for backpackers with a limited budget or beginners.

It takes a bit of time to set up, prime and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camp stove that will not let you down. The flame is extremely powerful and can easily boil one liter of water within two minutes. The only drawback is that it's not as efficient for simmering as some other stoves.

This is the reason MSR has developed the Dragonfly stove to be a pot that can be used as a simmering stove. It has a similar design to the whistler, but it's more compact and provides better performance. However it's not as affordable as the whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus stove and cookset is a fantastic alternative that offers the same setup at half the price. Whisperlite International and Universal can be utilized with isobutane. Both versions have the same basic design however the Universal version is also compatible with canister fuel.

Coleman Sportster II

Like many Coleman stoves, this is a no frills, rough and ready unit that just gets the job done. It's small, self-contained and solid, with the tank at the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it easy to use and a great option for backpackers, beginners who want to save on weight, and for those of us who like to keep an extra or two in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha which is also referred to as "white gas") but it can be used with unleaded gas too. This option can save you money since a gallon of gasoline can last as long as the standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder.

Liquid fuel stoves come with a learning curve as you'll need to pressurize and prime them before you get a nice blue flame. If you get it wrong the fuel could be sprayed, pool, or splash over the burner, or splash out. To master this try it out in the open before you go on your trip.

The stove will suffer some of its performance and efficiency if you use non-Coleman fuels. However, this is a tradeoff for its versatility. Make sure to purchase unleaded gasoline and not something that is enriched with methanol or ethanol (alcohol). This is because these types of fuels can cause the unit to be sputtering, leaky, and may even explode!

ATG Jiko

The ATG Jiko Multi Fuel Stove from South Africa is an ultralight cast iron multifuel stove designed for harsh environments such as Africa. It's a compact and reliable all-in-one system that burns solid fuel, alcohol, tabs, and also gels using one nozzle. It's a light minimalist design that is priced less than other multifuel stoves. It also comes with low costs of ownership, with fuel being less expensive per liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves have an individual nozzle for every type of fuel. It isn't easy to switch between fuels in cold weather conditions, or while wearing gloves. This can add weight to the overall load. Multifuel stoves of the newer type utilize a single nozzle to burn multiple fuels, making it easier. These stoves can be referred to as hybrids or multifuel compressed fuel stoves. They are also known by other names such as white gas, isobutane kerosene, and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.

Another option is to buy an multifuel stove kit which converts your standard Trangia burner into a multifuel cooker. They are usually available at camping stores that specialize in camping and are also available for purchase internationally. These are great for Trangia enthusiasts. They can burn all liquid fuels, apart from diesel, and with the right accessories they can even simmer.
