Handle

Over time, uPVC window handles and locks can become damaged due to wear and tear, accidental or intentional damage. This can mean that the lock or handle becomes difficult to open or close, or it's not even locked in any way. It's tempting to replace the entire window unit when this happens, but it is not always necessary. It's usually the case that a replacement handle or lock is sufficient.

The espagnolette style is the most popular uPVC window handle. The handle comes with a spindle that protrudes from the handle. It is inserted into a gearbox, which controls the multipoint locking system inside the window. It's an ideal idea to replace the handle of a uPVC handle using screw covers to shield the screws from corrosion and keep them secure. You can also employ a washer, spacer or other sealant to ensure an even tighter fit. A screw cap that is in place will also stop water and debris from getting into the handle and cause damage.

Hinges

If your windows are starting to open and close with a visible gap this can be caused by the hinges not being aligned with the frame. A new aluminium window handle crank is able to be replaced with minimal effort, but it's important to ensure that you purchase the correct size replacement. Ensure that the replacement has the same step in height as the previous one that can be established by measuring the distance between the guide for the crank arm bushing and the notch that runs along the track that runs across the bottom of the window frame. You can also determine the length of the spindle on your existing handle to determine what size you will need for a replacement.

The type of handle that is fitted to your window will determine the kind of crank mechanism you need for your casement and awning windows. Espag handles have a mental spindle in the back that is attached to the frame of the window and is the motor that drives the mechanism. Cockspur door handles victorian are fitted with pegs that are fixed in their position by three or four screws which are set in the sash and the frame.

Once you've identified the right replacement, it's easy to fit. First, take off any trim mounting screws from the casement cover of your window and then carefully lift it off to reveal the window operator innards (Photo 1). Remove any trim screws that are rusted and then check the operating lever with the previous to ensure that they match. Then, attach the replacement to the window frame, replacing any screws that were damaged or bent, and then place the casement cover over the mechanism.
