Choosing a Fold Up Pushchair

Fold-up pushchairs make it simple to get on and off public transport, or fit into the back of a car. They are also very lightweight and compact which makes them ideal for traveling by plane.

This UPPAbaby model has one of the most eye-catching compact folds we've seen. However, it has some limitations, such as a tiny canopy and lack of storage.

Folding is easy

Think about the location and how you'll use the egg pushchair before choosing one. If you're taking your child on a plane then a compact and light buggy will be a great alternative. It can fit into the overhead compartments for luggage and is small enough to be carried on the shoulder. It is recommended to choose a buggy that can fold using one hand while holding your child. It must also include a handle that is adjustable in height, to ensure that caregivers and parents with different heights are able to use it comfortably. A swivel lock wheel is essential if you are planning to hike with your baby. It will help you navigate the terrain that is uneven. Other useful features to consider include a deep recline for easy naps on the go and an extendable canopy which provides additional sun protection.

Many pushchairs claim to be able to fold with one hand but it's important to test it before purchasing to confirm it's actually feasible while holding your child. Our test subjects found the UPPAbaby GLUXE to be especially good, with its clever mechanism that concertinas down to a slimmer, sleeker package than an umbrella. It has a pocket that can keep phones and keys as well as a recliner seat that can be adjusted by a single touch.

Some of the most compact fold up pushchairs are designed to be used right from birth, and include a lie-flat seat or the option for an additional carrycot, which means they're great for babies who need to rest during the daytime. If you plan on using your travel system right from the beginning using a one-click attachment method for an infant car seat is a must.

The tiniest of the bunch is the Cybex Libelle, is an outstanding option for jet-setting families because it folds more compactly than its counterpart the YOYO2 (only 4cm less) and weighs less than 6kg, making it extremely easy to carry. It's also incredibly easy to use, with a simple fold with one hand and a reclined seat which is perfect for naps with toddlers. This model is an excellent choice for hikers, since it has a large front swivel tire that can handle any terrain.

One-Handed folding

It's always a good idea to have a foldable pushchair, whether you are walking around, taking public transport, or flying to a foreign country with your child. It's not ideal to have to fold a complex travel system while trying to manage the child and all their necessities, including keys, shopping bags and other things. This is why pushchairs and strollers that can be folded one hand are the most sought-after option for parents.

Like the name suggests, a one-handed fold pushchair can be collapsed with just the push chair for sale of a button or two. Some models require a bit more effort, or even two hands, but the convenience of the process means they are nevertheless easy to maneuver and store away. They are also lightweight which makes them easier to carry or store in tight space.

An excellent example is the G-Luxe model from UPPAbaby. This model has one of the most simple one-handed folds we've seen in our round-up, and features a quick and smooth operation that involves only pulling on a lever at the base of the chassis. It is also able to stand on its own, making it perfect to store in the corner of a café or in a foyer.

Another model that features a simple, one-handed fold is the Bugaboo Bee. It's one of the first compact-fold pushchairs. While it's larger than the other models the Bugaboo Bee still has an easy to use, neat fold. It comes with a wide array of features, such as a deep recline and an UPF 50+ canopy that can be expanded designed to keep your child safe on hot days.

Some of these compact-fold pushchairs are only suitable for older babies or toddlers however, there is many models that can be used as early as birth. These pushchairs come with seats that can be completely or partially lied-flat and some come with an infant car seat. MFM editor Gemma has travelled extensively with her son in the Babyzen YOYO which is one of the first buggys of this kind and still a favorite. It's a little less compact fold than some other models, but it's very easy to carry and fits into the cabin luggage allowance on a majority of airlines.

Lightweight

When a pushchair folds down, it occupies a small space, and is usually extremely light. This is especially true of umbrella-folding pushchairs, which typically weigh under 20 pounds. They're great for short walks on flat surfaces and pavements as well as for a simple way to get between your car and other people's houses. They're also a good choice if you don't want to buy an all-terrain buggy and are happy with your pushchair on flat surfaces.

If you're planning to use a compact folding pushchair on uneven ground or on muddy or sandy surfaces, you should consider an air-filled tyre. These tyres are heavier however they offer better grip and traction. It's important to keep in mind that the extra weight will add to the size of your pushchair.

A variety of lightweight pushchairs were created for older infants and toddlers who can sit independently however, more are suitable from the time of birth. Models like the Mamas & Papas Airo have a lie-flat seating area and can be used in conjunction with a car seat for infants or a carrycots (sold separately). Some compact-folding pushchairs are designed to work with a stroller board to transform into a double-buggy - ideal for taking Grandma or Grandad along.

A lot of the top lightweight pushchairs are simple to use. Some pushchairs can be opened or closed with the press of one button. Others feature more intricate mechanisms, yet they take up a small amount of space. Some have a strap on the wrist that allows you to the pushchair in place even when it's folded, and this could make a significant difference in the ease of maneuver.

The 3D Lite stroller from Contours is a great example of a compact stroller that's packed with features. There's also a substantial basket, lots of padding, adjustable handlebars (for parents who are tall or short) and a huge canopy that protects. Plus, it's very lightweight and comes with a handy carry bag.

Compact

One of the primary things you will need to consider when selecting a pushchair is the size of the pushchair when folded. Some have a very small fold, while others are larger, according to their overall dimensions and the features they include.

Compactness is also important for those who plan to travel with your rear facing pushchair. Some models fold down to a small size or even a bag making them easy to store in the trunk of your car, or take on a plane. This is ideal if you plan to travel frequently or reside in an urban area, where you can't take a larger stroller with you daily.

The most effective pushchairs are those with an easy, simple fold process. The Babyzen YOYO was the first of its kind and has since been imitated however it stands out thanks to its innovative design and superior performance.

The Ergobaby Metro+ can also be used as a lightweight stroller that can be used for daily use. It has a compact fold that can be set upright when not in use. It's not as easy-to-use as other models, and can create a lot more noise when you adjust its canopy. This could wake your baby.
