It is nevertheless important to make sure that you have at minimum two keys working for your car. It can be expensive to replace a key in the event that you lose it.

How to Replace the Ignition Key in a Saab9-3

If the car key won't start in the ignition it is time to replace it. This guide will guide you through how to do it on a Saab 9-3. You will have to replace the key, purchase an additional reprogrammable cell and then purchase a new casing for your key-fob.

The most modern saab car key replacement models make use of transponders instead of a key made of metal to unlock the car and then start it. The issue with this is that the reprogrammable battery inside the key-fob will eventually wear out and will not hold a charge anymore. This is particularly true if you keep using the same key on the same lock.

The good news is that the battery is easily replaced by a professional locksmith. You can also do it yourself if you have the appropriate tools and a bit of patience. The first step is to separate the key-fob. Insert a flathead into the slot in the middle of your case. It is important to be careful, as the plastic is very thin and can be damaged easily.

After the case has been opened and you are able to prepare the new key by combining the lower portion of the previous key with the banana and transponder on the new key. This will ensure that the new key is linked to the CIM properly, which can make a big difference when replacing the primary key for your Saab 9-3.

How to replace the ignition Key in a Saab 900

If you don't have two keys, you'll have to remove the dashboard and steering wheel for access to the ignition. Start by disconnecting your negative battery cable. After the battery has been disconnected, it is possible to remove all the trim pieces and dashboard pieces that surround the steering wheel. Once the dash is removed, you can push a screwdriver into the hole on the back of the ignition switch and remove it.

The ignition barrel has the key lock, which can stop the car from starting if the key isn't inside it. If the ignition switch on your 900 isn't working properly, check to see whether the key is inside the lock or inside the barrel. You should also rotate your keys and keep them clean to avoid breaking.

How to replace the ignition Key in the Saab9-5

The metal part of a traditional Saab key is simple to copy, and is not a major obstacle against theft of a vehicle. The electronic portion of the key fob has an electronic chip that detects the car when the key is placed in the ignition switch.

Saab's anti-theft system has been relying on this technology for more than 10 years. It's not as good as an actual lock on the door but it makes the process of stealing your vehicle harder. Every Saab owner needs to keep a spare Saab key in their car.

Most new Saabs come with two keys from the factory, but you can purchase additional keys at the dealer with a handheld computer referred to as a Tech-2. The cost can be under $400 for the transmitter+transponder (different than the metal key blade/shell that opens the doors and turns the ignition cylinder). The only exception is the NG 9-3 cars, which have newer, more modern features that require a different key-fob and work through a different process.

The dealer will replace the CIM or TWICE module on those cars if keys are lost. They'll charge you top dollar to do it. But we can reprogram the EEPROM in your existing computer and set it up to accept new keys, without having to replace the expensive modules.

How to Replace the Ignition Key on the Saab XC90

It's probably time to replace your SAAB key fob if it's having trouble turning the barrel of your lock. It's fairly simple and doesn't require you to visit a dealer. You can complete the process at home using just a few basic tools.

First, you'll need to prepare the new key. Before you start, ensure that the anti-theft device is disabled by placing blocks on the rear wheels and activating the handbrake. Then, you can insert the key into the ignition and switch it to the on position which activates the accessories, but doesn't start the engine. Repeat this five times and leave the key in the on position.

You'll then need to purchase an additional case for your key fob. They are readily available at many auto parts stores and are typically quite affordable. You can get them without electronics, based on the model.

To open the case simply push the screwdriver with a flathead into the slot in the middle. The case should split easily, and once you've done that, you'll have access to the internal electronics. Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry out the electronic components.
