Saab cars built since about 1994 have an immobilizer system that is based on codes for keys. A new transponder is required to allow the inclusion of an additional key, and special programming. This is usually done at the dealer with a specialized Tech2 diagnostic tool.

It can be costly. This is the reason why you should always have a spare key on hand.

Transponder key

The transponder key is a key equipped with an electronic chip. It sends a signal to car when it is inserted into ignition. The car is able to check whether the signal matches with the one on the key. If the signals are in sync the car will then unlock and start. This is a great way to safeguard your car from theft.

Transponder keys could be an increasingly popular feature for cars, but they're not as safe as traditional keys made of metal. The metal portion of a traditional key can be easily cut or copied, while transponders are protected by an electronic chip that guards it. The chip is a unique code that's programmed into a car's computer in order to identify it.

The car will recognize the Saab keyfob and allow it to be turned on. But, it's only able to do this if the fob has a non-modified chip that has been programmed to match. The car will not start in the event that the key is not programmed to match.

It's important to make sure that you have a spare key for your Saab. This is particularly true if you reside in a rural area with numerous car thieves. The good part is that you can obtain a replacement key for your Saab without having to go to an auto dealer and pay the high prices that they demand. In most instances, you can get a brand new key made right on the spot at a fraction of the cost you would pay at a dealer.

Key for Wired

Saab cars typically come with two keys upon purchase. If you only have one, it's recommended to purchase an additional key fob as quickly as you can since if you lose it, your car will require a new CIM unit, and the locking cylinders have to be replaced. This can be expensive especially for cars that are used.

The next step is connecting the row and columns wires to your microcontroller. This is the most difficult part of the project and will require a large deal of soldering. There's no standard way to do this, but it's important to plan out the way you'll route and solder the rows and columns. For this keyboard, there are 5 rows and 17 columns, so there will be 22 microcontroller pins and wires to connect.

Once the rows and columns are soldered, it's the time to connect them to key switches. To do this, put a diode on each key switch pin and solder it. This will protect the pins of the key switch from current and stop them from being shorted. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction, and has a an indicator in black that indicates which way the current will flow.

Some of the tools offered at auto parts stores -like the Autel MaxiIM IM608 Pro and IM508 -- may assist customers at the shop or DIY users in some cases replace keys in the program and restore lost immobilizer information, Sanabria says. The tools connect to the OBD port and guide the customer through the procedure, making it much easier than replacing the computer inside the vehicle.

Jump starting the battery

A lot of people keep the set in their trunks to jump-start their car in case of emergency, but this might not be the best option for vehicles with newer technology. These vehicles are equipped with many electronic devices and computers that communicate with one another. A voltage spike when batteries are connected to another can fry the components making your car inoperable.

Start the vehicle you are using and let it run for about two minutes before connecting the cables to the battery that is not working. Attach the red clip to the positive terminal on the battery that is good (it will have "POS" or "+" on it). Attach the other end of the black cable to a clean, unpainted metal surface underneath the disabled car's hood. The engine block would be a good choice. The black cable should not be connected to the negative terminal of the dead battery. This could trigger sparks that could ignite the gasoline that is in the engine compartment.

Once the cables are connected, you can start the vehicle you are not using and let it run for approximately five minutes before you disconnect the cables in reverse order. Be aware that the battery in the saab key programmer 9-3 gets recharged while you drive, so it can take a while for the battery to go back to its original level. You should consider purchasing an additional key fob as soon as possible. Replacing the only one that works requires the installation and programming of a brand new computer chip.

Replacement Case

Many Saab owners only have one key for their vehicle and if they lose it, it's going to cost them. The reason is that it's not inexpensive to purchase a new key, and that involves replacing the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE on older models, plus programming. It's best to have a backup key in the event of theft or other disaster and the best option is to purchase an extra key as soon as you can. But don't buy a used key, even the case that it's "new." Keys that are claimed to be new from a second-hand store will not work and are almost guaranteed to fail at the crucial moment.

Most locksmiths cannot help you when you only have one working key, and the dealer will charge you high prices to replace the computer in your car for a replacement saab key.
