Cheap Multi Fuel Stoves

Kovea Hydra

But that doesn't make it any less useful.

It's a typical stove with an inbuilt burner that is attached to a body that is anchored by three support legs that fold out. The pump is located on top of the fuel line, and the generator loop is wrapped around the inlet, and the flame spreader sits over. The burner is a low-velocity flame type. This means it is less affected by the wind.

It is a nice feature that it can also be used with a canister of isobutane or propane, which makes it a versatile small cooker. It's easy to simmer on isobutane or propane and burns all types of fuel at a reasonable level, however it is slower than some other stoves when you use white gas.

One important thing to remember concerning the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English which was not written by a native speaker of the language. The instructions caution you against using certain kinds of lighter fluid. If they are mistaken they could result in an accident and land Kovea in legal trouble. But, any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas container from a reputable brand is likely to work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an excellent option for those looking for a multifuel cookware that cooks with a variety of fuels. It can be used with gas, petrol/gasoline or diesel, kerosene and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for every fuel type and allows you to alter the size of the flame. This stove also has a fuel line that lies flat on the ground and is easily connected to the tank.

The Primus Omnilite is an excellent stove, but it needs maintenance to keep it operating efficiently. In particular it has a tendency to flare when priming which can be a bit risky. This is a problem that occurs with all stoves with liquid fuel that utilize a secondary spindle on the stove's side instead of an actual coil to vaporize the fuel.

It is also important to know that each fuel type needs the use of a different jet. This means that if you're cooking using kerosene, the jet hole has to be smaller than when cooking with gas. It's not a major issue, but it's worth mentioning.

MSR Whisper Light

This makes it easy to use and a great choice for beginners, backpackers who are looking to cut down on weight and for those of us who want to keep an extra or two in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's exclusive fuel (naptha also known as "white gas") but can be used with non-leaded gas too. A gallon of gasoline will last as long as a typical Coleman liquid fuel cylinder, which means you'll save money on fuel by using this alternative.

Liquid fuel stoves have a learning curve as you'll need to pressurize and prime them before you can get a nice blue flame going. If you don't do it correctly the fuel may pool, spray outside the burner, or sputter. Do some practice outside before going on your next trip to get the hang of it.

The stove will lose some performance and odor of the flame efficiency if you choose to use non-Coleman fuels. However, this is a tradeoff for its versatility. Make sure you purchase unleaded gas and not something that is augmented with alcohol or Methanol.
