Mazda 3 Key Fob Replacement

There are times when a Mazda 3 owner might need to change the battery on their key fob. You can easily perform this task yourself.

Find the small button on the back of your key fob. Press this and remove the cover.

Lost Keys

Losing your car keys was an issue of minor importance. You could replace keys at any hardware store, locksmith shop, or dealer, and it was fairly cheap to do so. Today, your car's advanced key fob does more than simply lock and start your vehicle and that convenience comes with a cost higher cost for replacements.

The key fob features an embedded security chip in it that transmits a unique code to the car's system to let you unlock and start the engine. The key fob is capable of controlling various other functions, such as opening the windows when you're in a hot spot and summoning your car to you to make it easier to reverse into a tight spot (a feature found on some Genesis GV60 and Hyundai Sonata sedans).

Luckily, Mazda's remote fobs aren't as costly as those from other automakers. You can even replace the battery of your key fob yourself with a little bit of know-how. You'll require a flathead screwdriver along with a new CR2025 to accomplish this. Use the red and directions buttons to lock or unlock your doors prior to changing the batteries.

If you're looking to save money on the cost of a Mazda 3 key fob replacement, look for one online that is OEM and doesn't require programming by a dealer or locksmith. eBay has many options, however, they may not be the same color as your existing key fob.

Lockouts

One of the most horrible things that can happen to a driver can be getting locked out of their vehicle. There are, however, a few techniques that drivers can employ to get back in their vehicle. The first step is calling the local locksmith or Mazda dealership. This is a great option because it's less expensive than calling for a tow truck and will be quicker too. The locksmith or dealer will require a key code from the database in order to create the new key fob which typically costs about $100. This is why it's important to keep this key code in a safe spot.

Another thing that drivers can do when they are stuck outside of their car is to look at the underside of the key fob in search of an auxiliary button. There is typically small, round button that can be pressed and held. This will unlock the doors of the vehicle and allow the owner to open them by hand.

Another way to gain entry into an unlocked vehicle is using the emergency override feature. This will allow you to use the key fob to disable any functions that have been disabled by the theft deterrent system. This usually triggers the hazard warning lights and beep sound for confirmation that the doors, lids for fuel-filler, or liftgate are closed.

Transponder Chips

You'll need to replace it if your key fob has a transponder built into the head of the metal L-shaped key. The chips are unique in identification number that allows your vehicle to start the engine.

The antenna ring emits a blast of radio frequency energy when you insert your key made of metal and switch it on. The energy is then absorbed by the chip transponder in the key. The chip responds by sending an encoded message to the antenna ring. This informs the Car key replacement service that the key is legitimate.

Most Mazdas utilize a transponder chip that is rolling code that alters its code each time you turn the key. This means that your key will not function with your vehicle until you have a second copy with the exact code in the ignition.

Fortunately, it's not impossible to create your own replacement keys. If you find an original key that works then insert it into your Mazda. Then turn the ignition ON. If the key starts your car, you can then copy the information to the other key. If needed, you may also use the eraser of your key fob in order to erase the code. Programming

Now you can program your new key fob. Insert the first key that is working into the ignition and turn it on. Wait for about five seconds and then turn the ignition off. Repeat the process with an additional key that works, and then your new (or additional) key. After you've completed this and the key that you have programmed should be able to start your Mazda. If it's not there may be a problem with the key fob or vehicle.
