Three Wheeled Buggies

Three-wheeled buggies are ideal for walking around the neighborhood or for jogging. Their compact design makes them easy to maneuver, even in tight spaces.

If you're looking for an easy ride in your pram, choose models with 360deg front wheels with swivel. They are susceptible, however, to punctures. Make sure you have an emergency repair kit.

Frame made of sturdy material

Recent figures have been released that show that the three-wheeled buggy - that noughties symbol of more money than sanity is on the verge of disappearing. They have been replaced by four-wheelers which can be more versatile in terrain, yet still look elegant and easy to push.

The principle is that the larger the wheels, the easier it will be for your buggy to cope with bumpy and rough pavements. The larger wheels both rear and front, make it easier to move and more stable when walking downhill or over difficult terrain.

MFM reviewer Kath tried the buggy with a newborn as well as a 3 year old and found it coped well with grass, cobbles, rough roads, dirt tracks and kerbs. She said that it felt solid to push and extremely solid on rough terrain. Its tyres (which are inflatable so need occasionally pumping) offer built-in suspension that was very comfortable for my children.

The shape and size of the seat is a further factor to think about. It should be large enough to accommodate your child's comfort and you will also require it to recline so that they can lie flat. Some three-wheel buggies offer the option of reclining completely, while others allow a parent facing one.

The Roma Atlas is a great alternative for off-road or wet walks. This buggy is suitable for a single child as early as birth and can be adjusted to accommodate two children as your family expands. It is suitable for infants and toddlers from birth to age 4. It comes with a bumper, raincover, an improved 5-point harness, and a huge cushioned seat. The storage options are good as well, with a decent-sized basket, zip pockets in the hood and an easy-to-access pouch on the back of the seat unit.

Larger wheels

Larger wheels mean your buggy will be more stable on uneven terrain, which is ideal for off-road buggies. They also allow you to maneuver the pushchair in tight spaces. Many three wheeled buggies have rotating front wheels that aid you in maneuvering around tight corners, while others are designed for running and come with fixed front wheels that lock to increase the speed and stability at which they can be pushed. This is particularly useful when you hit trees or a kerb. The front wheel can be lifted slightly to keep it from hitting it.

A majority of 3 wheel pushchairs come with air filled tyres which means they are able to handle many different terrains and are far more flexible than four wheelers. They are also lighter. However, they're prone to punctures so you'll need to have a repair kit, spare inner tube and pump in your bag.

Both of these buggies have larger wheels that, as per MFM reviewer Kath, "perform really well on grass, gravel tracks and market town cobbles" and are able to easily move up and down kerbs. They also have a suspension system which in her words "smoothes out bumps very effectively".

The downside of having larger wheels is that they make buggies quite large and may struggle to squeeze through narrow spaces. This can be an issue if you plan to use it for jogging or have to squeeze through narrow doorways while out and about. Many models have compact folding options that permit you to take off the front wheels and store them more compactly.

Easy to Manoeuvre

One of the primary benefits to a three-wheeled buggy is that it is much more maneuverable particularly with a child in the back. The way they are constructed means that the front wheels turn at a quick pace and are really maneuverable, making them ideal for difficult terrain like cobbles, parks, bumpy pavements and dirt tracks.

MFM reviewer Kath tried an all-wheeler with her toddler. she reported: "The Terrain is a delight to navigate on uneven terrain. The swivel wheel in the front was especially useful." I was also impressed with how well it handled kerbs with the hand-operated break. It was extremely stable when in the downhills or on a rough terrain."

The only downside of this great maneuverability is that the 3 wheel buggy's bigger wheels sometimes mean that it can struggle in tight spaces, something to keep in mind if you live in a urban area. If this is an issue then a 4-wheeler might be a better option for you.

Kath the MFM reviewer, also appreciated the space of this buggy. There's a nimble, large basket that is surprising spacious for a vehicle of this size. Plus, there's also an excellent pouch on the back of the unit, as well as two smaller mesh pockets underneath the hood where you can keep your phone and keys.
