According to the documents obtained by Monk and the Yale Law School Veterans Legal Services Clinic and Monk, he claims that VA denied his disability claim at a greater rate than white veterans during the past three decades.

Monk, a retired psychiatric nursing, claims that discrimination from VA has caused him, as well as other black vets to suffer in a manner that has affected their health, their home lives and employment as well as education. Monk wants the VA to pay him back the benefits they have denied him, and to modify their policies regarding race and discharge status as well as denial rates.

Monk and the Veterans Legal Services Clinic received 20 years of VA disability claim data in the past year as part of a Freedom of Information Act request which they filed on behalf of National Veterans Council for Legal Redress, and the Black Veterans Project. This data showed that Black veterans were statistically less likely to be granted a disability claim than white veterans between 2001 to 2020. Discrimination in PTSD

The Veterans Affairs Department systematically denies disability benefits to Black veterans, according to the lawsuit filed on Monday. The suit is filed by a former Marine Corps vet who was denied housing and education as well as other benefits despite having a diagnosis of PTSD. The suit cites evidence that suggests that VA officials have historically denied claims made by Black Veterans in adisproportionate way.

Conley Monk was a volunteer in the Marines during the Vietnam War, driving a truck that was shot and helping move equipment and troops to combat zones. The lawsuit is seeking monetary damages and seeks to have the court require the VA to examine the the systemic PTSD bias. It is the latest effort by groups such as the ACLU and Service Women's Action Network to demand the VA to address discrimination that has been in place for years against victims of sexual assault.

Alimony Discrimination
