Glass Window Repair

Replacement

To allow for frame and glass expansion and contraction take measurements in both directions across the opening and subtract 1/8 inch. Then, buy double glazed window repairs-strength glasses made to these exact measurements. It is recommended to purchase enough glazier's clips or points to place them every 6 inches around the window pane.

If the manufacturer is responsible then you should call them and make a claim. After the new glass has been put in place it is crucial to cover it with a thin layer glaziers compound. Once the compound has dried, you can paint the frame to be a perfect match.

If you have a crack that extends more than an inch, cutting the crack with the edge of a blade just over the crack can help to prevent it from spreading any further. This method isn't completely foolproof, but it could slow the growth of the crack down to a manageable amount until you can take permanent measures.

Repair

If you're unable to reach the window in a timely manner, you can use silicone sealant to make a temporary repair. Simply run a bead of the substance around the outside edge of the broken window. It won't fully seal the gap between the frame and glass however it will keep the break in place while you repair it.

Repainting

Repainting your old glass windows is a great idea. This is a low-cost alternative to replacing windows, and can give your home a new appearance. Make sure the window is clean before painting. Wash the window with soap and water or use rubbing alcohol to remove oil smudges and other traces which can hinder the paint from adhering. You should also wear rubber gloves when working on glass to prevent the transfer of your own oils onto the surface of the window. Apply several thin coats rather than a single thick one. This will make the paint last longer and will keep your windows looking smooth and even.

If you're planning on repainting your glass windows, be sure you have the appropriate tools nearby. You'll need a brush or sponge, painter's tape a ruler, toothpicks, as well as a few other tools such as a rag or paper towel. You'll need the brushes and paints you'll use on hand. Other options include replacing the IGU with a single pane, or repairing the existing IGU by drilling a hole in its bottom and filling it with an anti-fogging solution.

You can also seal up the gap between a window frame and a sill or threshold using a felt strip, or vinyl V-strip. Felt can be stapled, glued, or put in place, but it is not a great protection against moisture. Vinyl weather stripping v-strip is durable and simple to install, but it can be expensive and is generally reserved for areas exposed to high abrasion. Door sweeps are inexpensive and can be nailed to the floor but they create little to no barrier between the sill or threshold and air, dust, and other debris.

To fix a cracked window seal first, you must employ a putty knife to take off the old caulk. Wearing protective eyewear and gloves carefully remove the glazing points -- tiny fasteners that hold the glass in the frame's recess, with sharp, pointed edges. After removing the glazing points, scrub the grooves and sand the wood to a smooth finish. Wipe off any sanding debris, then seal the bare wood surface using a linseed oil-based paint or clear sealer.

A putty or caulking knife can be used to apply the traditional glazing putty. However, using a knife will give an easier application and a more secure seal. Choose a putty specifically for glass, since it will last longer and will adhere better.

Apply a thin layer of glue across the inside of the frame where it meets with the glass. Slide the window into the frame so that the scribed line on the glass aligns with the edge of the frame. Apply pressure on the glass to press the putty and glass to form an elongated seal. Smooth the compound with a gloved finger and clean up any mistakenly applied caulk or errant drips prior to drying.
