What to Do With Your Rep Kit

Rep kits are a great method to fix your gear before you get to the trailhead to have it professionally repaired. The most important thing is to know when to do when you need it.

Being equipped with the right tools is essential when working in the field. This kit avon was designed with this in mind and contains all of the essential hand tools needed for repairing items on the field. The tools are all constructed of metal and contain very little plastic, which means they can be used in a variety of ways. The kit includes the coalcracker tool, a canvas zippered pouch and includes awl, reamer, twist awl, cutting shears, gimlet (5MM), sinue spool made of wood, a bottle of coalcracker tool oil and a set illustrated instructions.

Repair Patches

If you've got holes or two in your gear, consider adding adhesive patches to your rep kit. These tough patches feature a high-performance glue applied on a tough polyurethane back which lets a tear that is triggered by pressure to recover. These patches are available in colors or clear versions and offer durability against punctures, as well as sunlight, moisture saltwater, temperature extremes and.

If your kit doesn't include any of the above products, consider adding a bag of water-proof Aquaseal wader repair sealant. This water-tight glue will adhere to fabrics and metals to create permanent repair. This is ideal for repairs to drysuits and can also be utilized in the field. Let the sealant cure for up to 12 hours before using your repaired gear.

The essential field fabric kit for packs, tents and rainwear made of silicone-impregnated polyester. Includes one Clean Tape repair patch and an swatch of sil-nylon. Also included is a 1/4 ounce of Gore-Tex Sealant & Repair Adhesive & Brush and Sealant tube. Apply patch to clean smooth, flat surface. Allow a minimum 1/2 inch overlap. Remove release paper and rub the adhesive side down with moderate finger pressure.

Surface prep is important for successful repairs. Oils on boots or shoes sunblock, solvents such as Acetone can affect adhesion. For best results, apply Seam Grip alone or with Cotol-240 Cure Accelerator to speed up curing time up to 2 hours.

Adhesive patches

If you're on the trail and don't have time for an entire vulcanising repair the patches that are self-adhesive will get you back in the saddle in no time. Apply the self-adhesive patch and apply it by rolling it around.

Thoroughly clean the punctured area, then apply the tube-scuffer or sandpaper to roughen the surface which assists in making glue stick. Apply a thin layer of glue over the patch. Cover an area that is at a minimum large as the patch. The glue should become tacky then press the patch down firmly and secure it.

This kit contains two clear, adhesive-backed Tenacious Tape pressure sensitive fabric repair patches as well as a 1/4 ounce tube of Seam Grip urethane repair adhesive & sealant. It is perfect for reinforcing damaged sleep bags, rainwear, and packs.
