Avon's Relationship with Leonie

Heyer is averse to a romantic convention that is prevalent in this book. Rather than the tormented hero turning to gambling, sex, or alcohol, the heroine is fighting an internal struggle. Leonie has lived as a boy for most of her adult life. She is very reluctant to go back to being an adult. She can be an inconvenience for Avon to manage initially however, he is able to keep his usual jokes and takes good care of her.

One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was the way Heyer contrasted Leonie's boyish habits with Avon's cool, organized and reserved. Her impulsive physical reactions and blood-thirstiness are in stark contrast to his calm and collected manner. I also loved the way he defeated the villain without threat or chasing him; instead, he used insinuation and storytelling.

Heyer subtlely highlighted the limitations women face in this period. Leonie is not a fan of trading in her breeches and riding side-saddle to wear layers of skirts, petticoats and dresses. She also doesn't want to ride on the side saddle and shoots enemies (despite it being a hazardous job). Avon is initially uncomfortable with her rebellious behaviour, but he soon comes to love her.

It was a bit challenging to keep track of at initially, since Heyer calls the Duke various names on the initial pages. Once you have figured it out the book becomes easier to understand. This is a great book and I strongly recommend it! You won't be disappointed whether you're a Georgette Heyer lover or just like a good romance!

Avon's Relationship to Davenant

Avon is a household name for its beauty products, but also offers an opportunity to earn and is a prominent advocate for women's financial independence.
