All Round Cooling employs an All Round Cooling cooling plate located at the back of the refrigerator in order to hold cold air and avoid the loss of it when you open the door. It also reduces your need for power defrosting saving you both time and money.

The ice dispenser on Samsung fridges is one of the finest we've tested. Its patent-pending Twist Ice Maker dispenses large cubes by simply twisting, and it can be kept in the drawer below when not in use. This makes more space on the shelves and makes it easy to locate your favorite drinks and snacks.

You can decide how your fridge and freezer open by using Reversible Doors. It is easy to fit your fridge into the layout of your kitchen while keeping it neat and tidy.

Samsung's Family Hub is the central control center for your SmartThings connected home through large touchscreens on your refrigerator. It also did well in our tests, though the 21.5-inch touchscreen's bloated apps and lack of SmartThings or voice control integration are a missed opportunity.

The remainder of the fridge has plenty of room to store food, including two crisper trays as well as a middle FlexZone drawer that can be customised. The drawer lets you select among five different settings, based on the needs of your fridge freezer compartment. SmartThings

SmartThings isn't as popular a platform that Alexa and Google Assistant are, but it does have a lot of smart devices that you can add. It's also baked into Samsung smartphones TVs, tablets and tablets - as well as some fridges. It could be enough to warrant it for some, especially when you own a variety of Samsung products.

The SmartThings App is well-rounded and polished, and includes an "if x is greater than y is true, then y" automation feature that works well. You can set up things such as an alarm that goes off when sensors detect a flooding, or turning on the light when your phone detects you're in your home. It can also control your fridge if you connect it to a smart socket however we've had mixed results with this.

SmartThings requires a hub, which isn't expensive. Samsung has a range of models, including the SmartThings Station, which you can connect to your router, and uses as a nightlight. There's a lower-cost SmartThings hub dongle that supports Z-Wave, Zigbee and Thread.

Once you've connected your smart refrigerator to your smartphone and hub, it's very simple to use. SmartThings lets you control your refrigerator from anywhere. Notifications are sent to your smartphone when the refrigerator is opened or closed. You can set up schedules to set the temperature, and even create reminders.

SmartThings is an early member of the Home Connectivity Alliance, which is trying to make major home appliances from a variety of manufacturers interoperable. In the near future you could control your Samsung washer/dryer, Electrolux oven, and LG TV through the same app.

SmartThings isn't as well-known as Alexa or Google Assistant but it does have some big names on its list, like Arlo Nest, Belkin, fridge Freezer Samsung and Lifx. It's compatible with Matter protocol that allows accessories to be linked regardless of the brand. For most users, however, merged Alexa and Google Assistant voice controls is probably the best bet.

Family Hub

A fridge freezer doesn't get much more modern than this: it has a 21-inch touchscreen inside the door, complete with a host of clever features. You can access entertainment apps, leave notes for family members (think big digital version of a notepad that is stuck to the fridge), check weather updates and more, thanks to Samsung's own voice activation assistant, Bixby.

The touchscreen lets you manage food and recipes. You can add ingredients from an app and check out what's inside your fridge using internal cameras. You can also create an inventory list of items on the go and monitor food items to determine when they'll expire. You can even download a specific recipe app that will read out the instructions as you cook.

This is the second generation of Family Hub fridges and Samsung claims it has spent a year fine-tuning them based on customer feedback. One major change is that you can now create different profiles for each family member so that they can personalise the information and apps they can access. It's not as great as the Alexa integration into your Fridge Freezer Samsung, but it's an improvement over the model of last year.

Family Hub is not only an application for managing entertainment and groceries but also controls Samsung's SmartThings platform. It can be used to control Matter-compatible devices such as lights plugs, locks, and lights.

Samsung's fridge is a few years old and while it still has plenty of features however, its touchscreen capabilities aren't a feature majority of people would consider an essential feature. These are more of a fun and semi-frivolous addition than anything else.

This could change as more software updates are made available, but for now these models are ideally for those who need the most complete connected fridge possible. If you aren't one of those, you could choose a lower-cost model that doesn't have the Family Hub to save some cash. If you have a lot of smart home appliances that you want to control with one screen, or you like the idea of having a fridge with a giant touchscreen, it might be worth the cost.
