Window Sash Repairs

Check the windows sashes regularly for signs of damage, mildew and mold. By catching problems before they become serious you will save money on repairs in the future.

The sash is the internal framing that moves vertically either up or down in windows that open. This article will teach you how to perform easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes give an elegant look to your home. If properly maintained, can last for years. However, they can become damaged or degrade over time due to exposure to elements and normal wear and tear. Heat gun with nozzle shield and medium setting will soften any putty that has been hardened. Remove the old sash, and keep it in a labeled bag.

Sash Weights

If your window sash repairs are to replace a broken cord or just to ensure that the windows are functional, replacing worn out sash weights will improve sash operation and reduce the energy cost. Sash weights are heavy, lead or iron cylinders that are enclosed inside a hidden compartment and attached to the movable the sash with rope. These weights act as counterbalances and allow you to open and shut the window without requiring mechanical or electrical devices. The sash weights are usually disregarded or disabled by homeowners and turned into scrap when they fail; therefore, you may need to search for replacements.

A weight in a sash that has fallen out of the cavity is difficult to get back, so you will want to find a replacement that fits correctly. You will also require an additional piece of string, a length of the sash cord, as well as some sash pulleys to tie the new sash weights onto the sash cord.

After removing the access panel, you can begin working on the sash. Take the narrow beads (also known as "tie rails") out of their grooves using the chisel or flat bar.
