Avon Books - A Brief History

Avon Publications was founded in 1941 by the American News Company as a paperback publisher. The company initially focused on comics, but then expanded to other genres, including romance.

Avon is now owned by HarperCollins, which also owns Harlequin. Their Diamond Anniversary celebration is underway.

Avon Publications

In the beginning of publishing on paperbacks, Avon Books was a major rival to the more literary Pocket Book company. Avon focused on mass-market appeal and published westerns, mysteries, and romances with colorful covers. Their books were cheaper than Pocket books and targeted women who could read between cooking and cleaning.

In addition to standard-sized paperbacks, Avon also published digest-format papers (the size of contemporary short story magazines) in series such as Murder Mystery Monthly and Avon Fantasy Reader. These editions contained many authors that are sought-after by collectors today such as A. Merritt, James M. Cain and H. P. Lovecraft.

Avon sold over 20 million books each year in the mid-1950s. Their 25-cent "G" series contained the most popular genres of westerns, whodunits and the boy-meets-girl stories that were popular in the era of the boy-meets-girl stories. Avon had 35 cents "T" series that included the usual suspects like mystery, science fiction, and the like.

In its beginning, the company's focus on popularity led to the publication of fantasy novels, ghost stories and Avon Book November sexually explicit love stories. These were far from the more literary Pocket competition. In 1959, Avon became part of the Hearst Corporation. The focus was shifted to more popular literature.

Avon is the largest women's beauty and novel company worldwide, with representatives on every continent. They also have offices in over 100 countries. They are a major publisher of Sunday Times and Kindle bestsellers that focus on crime, thrillers suspense, general fiction and saga. Avon Impulse

Avon was established in 1941 as a publisher of paperback books and comics. The company later specialized in romance novels. The company was established by Joseph Meyers and Edna Meyers Williams. Meyers employed his siblings and brothers as employees. He wanted to create an alternative to Pocket Books. They made this happen by printing cheap paperbacks with a mass appeal with lurid cover designs.

Avon reached its height as a romance publisher novels in the 1970s. The Flame and the Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, a sexy novel that spent 33 weeks at the top of the New York Times bestsellers list, was published. Rosemary Rogers' sexy novels, Sweet Savage Love and Wicked Loving Lies, were also published. This was the first time one novel was a top seller in this genre.

The company was acquired by Hearst Corporation in 1959. Hearst would put a focus on its romance offerings, causing it to grow into one of the biggest publishers of this genre. The company continued to publish inexpensive paperbacks that featured popular themes like westerns and whodunits, but the emphasis on romance helped them earn more money.

Avon still publishes romance novels today. Avon Impulse is a digital imprint that produces ebooks and paperbacks. The imprint accepts submissions from amateur authors who aren't represented by an agent. It also lets authors explore their creative potential without worrying about the publishing industry's reaction.

Avon Impulse offers a 25 percent royalty on the first 10,000 downloads, and 50 percent on every subsequent sale. The publisher also edits the work and has a sexy, feminine cover. The book is available for Kindle and Nook users, as well as on the ePub format.
