Window Sash Repairs

Check the windows sashes regularly for any damage, mildew and mold. By catching these problems early you will save money on repairs in the future.

The sash is the interior framing that can be moved vertically up or down in windows that are open. This article will teach you how to do easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window repair sashes give an elegant look to your home. If properly maintained, they can last for a long time. However, they can be damaged or degraded over time due to exposure or normal wear and tear. Sash repair specialists can restore windows to their original state and maintain their beauty much longer than replacement windows.

The first step in sash window repairs is addressing weather stripping, which can be found on both the sash and frame. If it's damaged or worn out, it could cause drafts and other issues. To fix it, begin by determining your window's brand and glass manufacturer date (etched in the corner of the glass or on the aluminum spacer between panes). Remove the sash, and mark its size and width so that you can get replacement weather stripping that matches.

Next, remove the sash and set it on a table so you can access all four sides. If the sash is double-hung, you must remove the weights using their ropes that should have fallen into the pocket in the jamb lining. After removing the sash using the utility knife, take off the weather stripping from the old sash by hand or using a putty knife.

Once the sash is clear, you can replace the parting stops. These are long pieces wood that divide the two sashes. Pam prefers the standard 1/2-inch by 3/4 inch window trimming from the lumberyard. However, you can substitute with a scrap piece of wood.

After removing the stopper for the parting and cutting it to length and then apply a thin layer of glazing compound on the bottom of the sash. This will protect the putty and give your sash a fresh appearance.

Sash Hardware

It is important to have the tools you need before you start. Start by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame with a pencil (Photo 1). Remove the sash and take off the hardware, including the parting beads (Photo 2) and the cords or chains that secure it. Sash Weights

Sash weights are able to be replaced to enhance the efficiency of your window sash and decrease the cost of energy.
