This is an excellent all round backpacking stove for use in the UK especially for trips where a wide choice of fuels is required. Its cost is affordable when compared to canister stoves that have similar capabilities. Additionally the Optimus Nova is easy to maintain and a pleasure to use.

Kovea Hydra

Since 2010 since 2010, the Kovea Multi Fuel Stove has been a favorite among backpackers. The Hydra isn't as well-known among UK backpackers any more Perhaps because they've caught up to better-known brands or the latest lightweight offering from China or Korea. But this doesn't mean that it's less effective.

It is a small and light stove that burns all liquid fuels including white gas, propane butane, multi-fuel Room heating stoves and white gas through only one nozzle. It's a typical stove, with the burner mounted to a body which anchors three fold-out support legs. A pump sits on the top of the fuel line, the generator loop goes around the inlet, and the flame spreader is situated above that. The burner itself is a low velocity flame type that allows it to be less impacted by wind.

It's a remarkably versatile cooker as it can be used with either propane canisters or isobutane. It's easy to simmer with propane or isobutane and burns all types of fuel with a decent amount of heat, but is a bit slower than other stoves that use white gas.

One important thing to remember concerning the Hydra is that the instructions are written in English that was clearly not written by someone who speaks the language. The instructions warn against the use of certain kinds of lighter fluids, which if mistaken for what is intended could lead to an accident that could land Kovea in a lot of legal hot water. That said that any 7/16ths UNEF threaded gas canister from a reputable brand is likely to work perfectly.

Primus OmniLite Ti

Primus Omnilite Ti can be an ideal option for those looking for a multifuel cooker that can cook with a variety of fuels. It can operate on gasoline, petrol/gasoline, Kerosene, diesel and aviation fuel. It has separate controls for each fuel type and also allows to alter the size of the flame which is a wonderful feature. The stove also has a fuel line that sits flat on the ground and can be easily connected to the tank.

While the Primus Omnilite is a fantastic stove, it does require maintenance to ensure that it functions properly. In particular it is prone to flare during priming, which can be dangerous. This issue occurs with all liquid fuel stoves, which use a secondary spindle at the stove's end instead of an actual coil to vaporize the fuel.

Another issue is that it requires different jets for each type of fuel. If you are cooking using kerosene, the jet hole will be smaller than if using gas. This is a minor nuisance but it's worth mentioning.

MSR Whisper Light

The MSR Whisper Lite stove is one of the smallest, lightest and most affordable multi-fuel stoves. It is also very easy to repair in the field. It can be used with canister or liquid fuel and comes with attachments for both. The new model is lighter by 10% compared to its predecessor and the burner system has been redesigned to improve the distribution of heat. This is a great choice for backpackers with a limited budget or those who are just beginning.

It takes some time to prepare, set up and boil water, but the whistler Lite is a reliable camping stove that will not disappoint you. The flame is extremely strong when turned to the max and can easily boil a liter of water within two minutes or less. The only issue is that it does not simmer like other stoves.

MSR created the Dragonfly to be a more capable burner. It has a similar design to the whistler, but it's more compact and provides superior performance. It's not as cheap as the Whistler Lite. The Soto Amicus cookset and stove is a great alternative, offering a similar setup for half the price. You can also get a Whisperlite International or Universal for isobutane canisters too. The same design is used in both, but the Universal version can be operated with fuel from canisters as well.

Coleman Sportster II

It's a simple, no-frills Coleman stove that does the job. It's compact, self-contained and solid, with the tank at the bottom and the burner on top. This makes it easy to use and is a great choice for beginners, backpackers looking to save weight and those who have spares in the van.

This stove is designed to burn Coleman's proprietary fuel (naptha also known as "white gas") however it can be used with unleaded gas too. A gallon of gasoline will last as longer as a standard Coleman liquid fuel cylinder, which means you'll save money on fuel with this option.

It requires some practice to get a good blue flame on a liquid fuel stove. You'll have to pressurize the stove and prime them correctly before you can start. If you don't do it right, your fuel may spill out, splash beyond the burner, or even splash out. To get the hang of this do some practice outside before you go on your trip.

The stove will suffer some of its performance and efficiency if you choose to use non-Coleman gasoline, but this is a tradeoff in its versatility. Make sure to purchase gasoline that isn't leaded and not enhanced with methanol or (alcohol). These types of fuel can cause the unit's performance to decline and even explode.

It's a lightweight minimalist design that is priced less than most other multifuel stoves and also offers low ownership cost with fuel being cheaper per Liter than gas canisters.

Other multifuel stoves feature a separate nozzle for each fuel type. This makes them a little difficult to change in the rain or without gloves, and could increase their weight overall. The latest models of multifuel stoves have discovered ways to make use of the same nozzle for various fuels, which makes it easier. The newer models of these stoves are known as 'hybrid' or 'compressed multifuel stoves'. there are many names for them, including isobutane canister fuel, white gas, kerosene and unleaded gasoline/car petrol.
