What is a Defra Approved Stove?

A defra-approved stove is wood-burning stove that has been approved by the UK Government Department of Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. This allows them to use in Smoke Control Areas within the UK.

DEFRA approved multi-fuel stoves is an English government department responsible for protecting the environment as well as food production and standards agriculture, as well as a thriving countryside economy. Defra also has strong protocols to control known diseases.

Defra approved stoves, also referred to as Defra smoke exempt stoves, are wood burning and multi fuel stoves that meet the emission standards of the government for use in Smoke Control Areas. These new standards do not prohibit the use of wood stoves in these areas, but only restrict the amount of smoke they emit when in operation.

Defra approved products are suitable to clean and disinfect hard surfaces, such as farms, buildings and vehicles. The Defra approved disinfectants list is maintained by the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), which charges an amount to approve new back-to-back approval trade names for disinfectants. APHA can also test the efficacy of a product at any point. This can be performed without submitting samples, and the results will then be added to the approved disinfectants list.

Approved for Smoke Control Areas

Many parts of the UK are classed as Smoke Control Areas, meaning you are only allowed to burn fuels that are approved or exempt appliances. This is to reduce air pollution from burning fuels that are not approved, causing nuisance smoke and ash build up. To avoid violating the law and getting fined, you must only burn wood logs in an approved DEFRA stove, fire or fireplace. These stoves have passed strict DEFRA emissions tests and are able to meet the minimum levels of smoke that are permitted in Smoke Control Areas. Look for the DEFRA Logo on the manufacturer's website or in their showrooms if you are considering the stove. If they've got the DEFRA logo, then you can be sure that the stove is Defra approved to be used in smoke-free areas and can be used to burn wood in these areas. You'll still require a suitable chimney lining, however, smaller 5kW stoves can be equipped with a 5" twin-wall stainless steel liner rather than the standard 6" liner.

You may be able get an approval from your local authority if you don't own a DEFRA-approved stove. This permits you to burn fuels that are not permitted in your home. You will need to visit the DEFRA website to find out whether you qualify for an exemption. There are rules that must be followed such as having a smoke detector installed. It is also important to note that if you own an open fire, barbecue or garden chimineas, you will need to follow the same rules as Smoke Control Areas.

Approved for Smokeless Fuels

To be defra-approved, wood burners need to be able to burn fuels that are smokeless authorised by the government without producing excessive emissions. These fuels, referred to as 'Smokeless Coal ' or 'Heat Logs', have been subjected to rigorous tests to ensure they comply with the requirements of the Defra's Smoke Control Areas. These fuels are a great alternative to real logs since they are less smoky and produce less smoke than seasoned logs.

Before the regulations for smoke control areas were put in place residents could use any kind of fuel they wanted, which caused lots of air pollution which caused health issues for those living in areas with built-up structures.
