Since 2000, all citroen replacement key cars and vans are equipped with transponder chips (chip) embedded in the remote or key. This kind of car key must be programmed to the vehicle via an instrument that is specifically designed for diagnostics. This process is very quick and easy when the right tools are available.

Other methods are available to program the Citroen key, but they are less secure and run a greater chance of corrupting the information stored on the microchip. Modern key systems have a remote fob which can lock and unlock your vehicle from a distance, and then deactivate the alarm with a touch of one button. This is a far more secure system and only your personal keys can operate it.

The Citroen Relay Key Fob range is a very popular line of vehicles, which includes the C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and the Xsara. All of these cars have transponder chips embedded in the key blades that allow them to start the car if the correct PIN code is received by the vehicle when the key is inserted, it will respond with an immobiliser code and the engine will start. This is referred to as a chip key and is very secure.

If you have lost one of these keys, it's usually simple to obtain an alternative from your local auto-locksmith. The only issue is that from 1998 onwards, the Citroen vehicles utilised a different kind of chip (known as a 'fiat' type 33) which is more complicated to replace in these instances. In these situations, it is necessary to perform a procedure known as 'eeprom' to obtain the most important information.

This is a highly specialised field of expertise, but we can provide this service from your home or office through our mobile workshop. This will save you a trip to the dealer who is likely to charge an additional amount for this service. Dealers will also require your V5 document and ID in person to be able to make an order for the replacement key which can take between two and five days for delivery. Once you've received the replacement key it will have to be programmed to the specific vehicle you own to allow it to function properly. This can again cost a considerable amount of money to a dealer.
