Replacement Upvc Window Handles

Almost all replacement upvc window handles include everything you require, however if the previous handle had screws or pins that held it in place, they must be removed. Remove the'snap-in' cover at the base of your handle.

Espag

Espag handles are a multipoint lock that is installed on casement windows, such as uPVC and wooden double glazing. The handle has a 7mm square shaft that is fitted into a gearbox on the uPVC window. When the handle is turned, it triggers a series of locks around the window's perimeter. Espag handles are also known as shootbolt handles and offer more security than the typical single point lock used on older window frames.

They are available in a variety of different options such as inline and cranked handle designs that can be used in left or right-hand operation. You can also find a variety of sleek ergonomically designed handles that are made to enhance both the feel of the handle and the way it appears on your windows.

If you are looking to replace your current uPVC window handle with an espag type handle, you'll be required to determine the dimensions of the spindle installed and measure it from the base of the handle to ensure that you purchase the correct replacement. This measurement is referred to as step height and will aid you in finding the perfect uPVC handle for your home.

If you have to remove screws that secure the handle, you can use a screwdriver or pliers. After taking off the screws or pins that hold the spindle together, you can disassemble the handle.

After you have removed the handle, you will be able to access the locking mechanism inside the frame of the windows and take out the cockspur block that is attached adjacent to the handle. This will allow the window to be opened. The replacement uPVC handles you have ordered should be able slide onto the cockspur block and then into handle spindle to allow the window to be opened again. It is recommended to replace the cockspur wedge block with an entirely new one when you change your uPVC handle to ensure that it is securely secured.

Cockspur

Cockspur handles are usually found on older uPVC and aluminium windows. The handle is turned and then closes onto a plastic wedge shaped receiver catch (not to be confused with timber window latches which are also handled in this section). These handles can be lockable or nonlockable. They are available in various nose sizes that can be adapted to the existing frame.

The handle locks using a slender spur (little triangle bit) pulling up against a wedge made of plastic that is fixed to the frame. These are usually one-way handles, but a deadlock with a locking mechanism can be added to give additional security.

The replacement handles for cockspurs are easy to install. All you need is the correct backset and a new set (supplied). The backset is measured from the baseplate to the underside of the nose of the handle. Aluminium window frames are typically 9mm wide, while UPVC is 21mm wide. There are a myriad of variations however it is essential to measure before buying the handle (see video below for how).

The spindle or, in some instances the entire handle is removed by unwinding the handle. The replacement handle is then fixed with a pair of pozidrivs screws. The pozidriv screws come in either zinc or brass finishes to match the existing hardware, and there is the option of a locking version that self-locks.

This cockspur handle is easy to install and is perfect to replace or repair old uPVC Windows. They feature an universal design, making them suitable for all backsets and profiles. Each handle comes with 3 packers of different thickness, these are neatly attached to the side of the handle's nose and can be combined in various ways to achieve backsets of 9-13mm, 17mm and 21mm. They are available in right and left handed versions, and replacement uPVC window handles are available in either nonlockable or lockable models, with a range of nose heights.

Turn and tilt

Tilt and turn windows are a popular European window design that has been used for decades in Europe but is beginning to gain traction in the United States. They combine the benefits of 3 window styles - tilt, in-swing, and pivot. This makes them ideal for older homes since they can be used to offer more airflow than standard window sash replacement styles.

When tilt and turn windows are closed, they lock like any other fixed window. However, by turning the handle 90° or 180@ (depending on the type of tilt and turn window) the sash can be opened inward and the window can be tilted in to allow air exchange through the opening at the top of the frame. This is a great option to let air circulate without the need to open a large window, which can be a safety risk if it is not secured properly when opening.

The sash window replacement can also be opened fully by turning the handle 90or 180@. This allows for complete air circulation which is especially beneficial for rooms that are smoky or where smoke or other smells can build up. This allows you to easily clean the outside of the glass by doing it from inside your home. This is a task that often requires a lot of risk.

Tilt-and turn windows are also safe. They are extremely difficult to open if they are locked in the closed position. They also have double seals which keep rainwater out of your home while in the tilted position or swing. This can be a particularly beneficial feature for older homes where intruders are more likely to target windows that are opened via the side hinges.

Spade

There are a variety of handles that can be put in on windows with double-glazed upvc. The two main kinds are Espag handles and Cockspur handles. There's also tilt and turn handles, spade or blade handles, and monkey tail handle. The type of handle you select will depend on your preferences as well as the type of windows you have.

It is important to know the way your current handle is attached to the frame to select the correct replacement upvc handle.
