Best Over-Ear Headphones

The headphones can be used for connecting to two devices at the same time and, thanks to a built-in sensor, they will automatically pause the playback when removed from your head. You can turn on ambient mode by placing your palm on the right ear cup. This lets you listen to the sounds around you without having to remove the headphones.

They can also be paired with your voice assistant. Bluetooth low-energy is also supported, as well as high-resolution audio (via LDAC). They come with a sturdy carrying case made from top quality fabric, as well as a USB-C cable for charging. The headphones with noise cancellation work with Android and iOS smartphones as well as computers operating Windows or macOS. The battery longevity of the WH1000XM5 is excellent. In our standard test we were able achieve 31 hours and 53 minutes with ANC activated, which is better than Sony's advertised battery duration of 30 hours.

You can also play them wired too, using the included 3.5mm cable that connects to an USB-C port located on the right earcup. The headphone's status indicator is an excellent touch with a green flash to indicate rapid charge and solid blue when Bluetooth pairing is in progress.

The B&W App offers the same control options that the buttons on the hardware provide including bass and treble adjustment, action button assignments, wear detection, a cycle of ANC modes and more. The app also displays an album cover and track's title when you play music from your iPhone. However, some popular features such as music presets and soundscapes feature aren't available.

Sennheiser HD 800 S

The HD 800 S is the successor of the iconic headphones from Sennheiser, and it is designed to meet the highest demands. The design and construction of the headphones has been optimized to provide a detail resolution that encompasses all of the frequency spectrum dynamic range, as well as stereo panorama. The Anker Soundcore Q20 is a good pair of headphones for those who wants to relax or simply want an affordable set of noise cancelling headphones. The ANC works well to block out loud passengers and engine rumbles, but their audio profile is a bit warmer and bass-heavy.

The Life Q20's controls are simple to use and are well-marked. On the left earcup there are buttons for powering up and pairing the headphones, as well as for turning on or off active noise cancellation. The earcups can be rotated to accommodate the shape of your head. The included 3.5mm audio cable lets you to listen to music while charging the battery.
