Best Over the Ear Headphones

Wireless headphones let you listen to music and podcasts without the requirement to connect wires to your audio device. They are an excellent choice for public transport, while at work or at home.

Wireless over-ear headphones may have an elegant design and superior noise cancellation. They usually come with a stylish storage case.

Soundcore Q30

A major upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018, these over-ears look better, feel sturdier and generally feel more polished. The hinges are more secure, and the soft cups are slightly larger. They are still largely made of plastic, however they're more polished. You can swap the 3.5mm cord for a high quality USB-C cable to connect them to mobile Hi-Res as well as stationary players. They also come with two microphones built-in, headphones wireless bluetooth (http://010-8888-8317.com/) which perform well in our tests for FaceTime, Skype, and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app offers a wide selection of EQ presets that can be saved and altered to listen to podcasts or cordless bluetooth headphones music in the way you prefer. This is what makes these headphones stand out from other ANC headphones and the Soundcore app is extremely simple to use.

When ANC is on the Q30's 40mm drivers eliminate most ambient noise, and provide an extremely pleasant listening experience. They have a natural sounding signature that leans a little on the treble side, which some might be unable to reproduce bass (we had better results using the Bass Booster EQ preset). You can fix this easily with the Soundcore App, which has an eight-band Equalizer.

These headphones have the power button and a pairing button on the left ear cup along with the USB-C port for charging. The right earcup has buttons for volume up/down, play/pause and volume up/down. Double-clicking these buttons lets you skip tracks or replay the previous one. You can also make use of voice commands to ask them to change modes or set alarms. The right ear cup can be covered by your hand to enable ambient mode, so you can be aware of what is happening around you without removing the headphones.

These headphones have a fantastic battery life. In our tests with ANC turned on the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than its rivals. This allows you to take advantage of an extended flight or a busy day at work. They can be charged quickly with the included USB-C cable, and you'll see an alert when they're getting empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of high-quality headphones for over-ear use that provide both active noise cancellation and Cordless Bluetooth Headphones playback. These headphones are designed to be high-end, premium headphones that can be used at home or while on the move. They're slightly more expensive than similar headphones but their superior sound quality is their main selling point.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a small elegant white box with a fabric finish. It comes with everything you will need. The package includes a fold-flat headphone carrying case, USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

The battery's 600mAh capacity will last for a whole day of casual listening. They also have an audio input to use wired. When used wirelessly they're paired via Bluetooth and you'll be able control their functions using an app (now known as Focal and Naim, probably in line with their English sister brand Naim's products for audio that are network-aware) or via the dedicated button on the left ear cup which scrolls between ANC profiles like'soft','silent 'transparent' and 'full'.

The app allows you to alter different settings such as the LED brightness, EQ presets including a'music profile' that sounds more neutral and brighter than other presets and their battery duration. You can also select the ANC mode and level and setting an 'acoustic settings that adjusts the sensitivity to mimic the sound of headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys feature a bass-rich sound profile that adds more warmth and punch to your favourite tracks. The result is that vocals and instruments can sound muted, while certain elements like cymbals could be less noticeable than on other headphones. They're also not as effective at active noise cancellation when compared to other over-ears with higher-end technology like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or cordless bluetooth headphones Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are well-known for their high-end quality and the WH1000XM5 headphones are no exception. It is the best of the'mainstream' over ear headphone market and is in the 'luxury' lifestyle market where brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are situated. The XM5s can be expensive however, if you can afford it find them, there's not a better pair of wireless headphones.

The XM5s come with features to simplify the lives of listeners and, in some instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to deal with manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. That allows for streaming of high-quality audio with bitrates that are higher than standard bluetooth headphones bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone that can be used for making calls without hands.

As with the previous generation of WH headphones, the XM5s excel in noise cancellation. They're among the best-performing cans for removing the constant drones found in train and underground carriages. The XM5s are great at their job of separating listeners from traffic noises of busy airports and streets also.

The sound quality is excellent. The XM5s aren't as clear in the low frequencies as the XM4, however, they have a higher level of clarity and openness, too. For example, the bass on Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head flexes the Sonys muscles with real force and definition, while not sagging everything else. The XM5s also have the ability to provide precise and accurate bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is also very good, with up to 30 hours of listening with ANC active and 40 hours when it's off. This is more than enough to cover a weekend getaway or several days of heavy usage.

The only real drawback here is that the XM5s lack any dust or water resistance protection. Sony actually advises against sweating in them or wearing them in the rain. This might not be a major issue for the majority of people, but for those who spend much time in the gym or live in a rainy region this could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of over-ear wireless headphones equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. Apple created dynamic drivers that measure 40mm, with a neutral sound profile that focuses on mids and highs without going too loud. This makes them great for both movies and music. They also have better sound quality when compared with other wireles headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made from memory foam covered in woven fabric, and they sit comfortably on the ears without pressing on the sides of the face. The ear cups also tilt and rotate to accommodate various head shapes. The hinges that are spring loaded have a strong but not too robust clamping force that ensures that the earcups stay in place during listening sessions.

A small button at the top of the right ear cup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. It also has an earphone-style jog dial with a push button similar to the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it around to control volume and press it one three, twice, or even three times to playback the controls. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are simple to use and well-placed, however I would have liked to have an option to power off or shut off the headphones when in use. The headphones go into standby when removed from your ears, or when placed in their case. They return to life when you place them over your head.

Another cool feature is spatial audio, which uses the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine where you're moving, then repositions the sound to make it seem like they're coming from those locations. This gives you a theater-like experience with videos and movies that were recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to audio in spatial format.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would be a bit disappointed when I spend $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the newer model would be better in the next year. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and improved battery performance, making it hard to justify the extra expense for most people.
